Valerian Root, The Natural Sleep Aid

There are people in this world who can sleep almost standing up, whenever they want to and wherever they want to. Then there are people who sleep because they need it and so 6-8 hours suffice. Then we have the section of society where there are people who are not able to sleep at all and have to resort to pills and other external factors to catch some shut eye or they will not be able to function efficiently and it will affect their life in every which way.

If you’re in the last group I would like to caution you against taking any prescription sleep drugs. Valerian root can help sooth a nervous mind and lull you to sleep naturally – without the potential side effects.

Insomnia is one of the biggest problems of the modern world that comes bundled with its stresses and strains.

Found growing wild in many places all over the globe and even in places like North America, Asia and Europe, the Valerian root has proved its usefulness for many centuries now. It is a perennial herb and it is not isolated in its use as a sleep inducer. It is non-addictive. It is mild and works well to treat anxiety and stress too.

This plant has stems and roots underground which are dried and converted into herbal preparations like tea and capsules. It’s important to note that post harvest handling is a delicate issue. If the machinery used is not of the best quality, the effectiveness can be reduced. Similarly, if the herb is not handled properly it will take away from the therapeutic value.

Valerian For Stress

Valerian relaxes tense muscles so it is found to be good for relieving stress attacks and bringing down anxiety and even panic attacks although research is still on about using it to treat serious conditions. It’s also suspected to play a healthy part in relieving some digestive problems like irritable bowl syndrome and diverticulitis.

The root is seen to have a soothing effect irrespective of the form of consumption. It could be tablets, capsules, powder, Valerian tea or as essential oil.

It is thought that the same calming effect that is seen on the mind may be seen on the digestive system including for those conditions brought on by stress. Be aware that when you buy any type of medication which has a mixture of different herbs, the concentration of the Valerian root should be enough to be effective. Make sure you go in for a reputed brand to be sure. If you have trouble sleeping, it could soon be Sweet Dreams with this root

  • I am an insomniac especially during times of stress. If I need help,
generally, I take Benadryl. I have heard that antihistamines *may*
hinder follicle development, so I am looking for an alternative.
Anyone know if Melatonin would be okay?
