A lot of times the Master Cleanse gets a bad rap because people assume it’s like a traditional fast where you don’t provide your body with any calories. They believe that because you’re not eating anything when you do the Master Cleanse that you are starving yourself.
They’re right about not eating anything, but they couldn’t be more wrong about a person starving them self when they do the Master Cleanse.
The truth is the lemonade you drink on the cleanse is fairly high in calories. Thanks primarily to the grade b maple syrup each serving of lemonade is around 110 calories. With most people drinking between 8-12 glasses of lemonade a day that’s 880-1320 calories a day. It’s restrictive, but it’s not exactly starving.

just read Body on Fire and according to it.....we are all slowing down our metabolism and will never loose weight by continuing on the master cleanse. is this right? On day 2 of a 15 day commitment to the MC
to Melissa: There are 10 different levels of detox. An only water fast would the quickest detox with the master cleanse falling into the 2nd fastest level of detox. However, there are slower ones in which you can drink and eat ONLY raw fruits and veggies that are alkaline, such as a juice fast or the raw diet. So, you could mix them, perhaps drinking the lemonade mixture but adding some fruits and veggies. Watermelon is the most alkaline fruit other than lemon and is mostly water, hence the name. However, avoid anything cooked or processed. This will immediately stop the detox process. Your body will see this as an unnatural foreign object and break it down, therefore taking the energy your body is using to detox to try to digest this food. Avoid anything that your body would see as acidic because toxins live in acidic environments. Also, sour fruits are the best, maybe some raspberries, when sour foods enter your body your gallbladder and liver purge stored toxins, which is why the lemon is such an important part of the mixture. If you added some raw fruits and veggies it would not exactly be "the master cleanse" anymore, but it would still be a form of detoxification for your body. Still try to avoid eating if you can (you want all of energy in your body focused on cleansing) but if you must eat, these are some guidelines. I hope this helps.
