Introduction

by Raylen on December 5, 2006

My name is Raylen Sterling,

Growing up I was not in the best of health. I was raised by a single mom who did the best she could, but often was so busy that at least one meal a day was take out or fast food. For snacks I would eat chips and soda.

As a result I was overweight as a kid. Actually I was obese. I remember my pediatrician telling my mom that if I kept gaining weight at my current pace I would likely not live to see 35 years old. As a result I was put on a diet, but after a few weeks of trying to keep me on a healthy diet eating in our house went back normal.

I was about 100 pounds overweight by the time I was 19 when I decided to take massive action, and finally lose weight. You might be wondering what was it that would drive a 19 year old to finally go on a diet. Was it good health? No, it was girls. It might not be the most noble reason, but for a teenager it was a powerful motivator.

I did the thing everyone tells you not to do to lose weight. I slashed my food intake to about 600 calories a day, and boy did I lose a lot of weight. 11 pounds in the first week. Close to 70 pounds after 3 months. But it was taking it’s toll.

I was famished, sleeping about 11 hours a day, and I was light headed.

My current 600 calorie a day diet was not good for me so I decided to eat a healthy 2,500 calorie a day diet, which for a guy like me who likes to workout, and lift weights should be perfect. But the only problem was the 3 months spent starving myself had lowered my metabolism, so when I starting eating a “normal” diet I still ended up gaining weight (about 35 pounds).

That weight loss attempt taught me a valuable lesson. I learned to never jeopardize my health in pursuit of good health. It sounds like common sense, but every day I see people taking drastic, even dangerous measures to achieve good health. Even with the Master Cleanse there are people who stay on this restrictive diet for longer than a month!

Today, I’m proud to say that I have lost weight, and I am healthy. By using the Master Cleanse for what it’s intended for – to purge unhealthy waste from my body, and help break my junk food addiction I was able to get my weight under control and finally feel good about myself.

The Master Cleanse is not easy, and if you want lasting results you’ll need to eat healthy after the cleanse, but the beauty of the Master Cleanse is how much improvement you will see in a short period of time.

If you’re curious about the Master Cleanse take a minute and read some of the comments below which are left by people from all walks of life, and feel free to add your own comments – I would love to hear from you.

I am on day 2 of my first MC ever

…and I am seriously battling with self-control! I love processed and salty foods (and ice-cream) and I have gained about 10-15kg in the past two years because of it. I am only(?) doing the MC for 8 days and have a few questions.

1. I can’t get any pure un-iodated salt so I am using celery salt that uses un-iodated salt but I am not getting a proper bowel movement! I have only had one a day… what must I do? (p.s. I am using peppermint green tea as I can’t get laxative tea either – no ordering over the internet for me)

2. What would happen if I didn’t finish the MC with the proper instructions (orange juice etc.), because I don’t know if it’s needed cause I am only doing it for 8 days.

3. How do I make the cravings go away??? I am only halfway through day 2 and it’s killing me!

Answers would be HUGELY appreciated.

I’m thinking of starting this cleanse the day after Easter Sunday. My motivation is to lose weight and kick my habit of emotional overeating/eating of sugars and refined carbs. I hope to eliminate the excess water retention that I have and feel more energetic. I will be checking in for inspiration and advice. Thanks for the inspiration so far… Good Luck Everyone!

This is my second attempt at the MC. My husband and I did it years ago while we were dating and it was HELL. I was starving the whole time, headaches, grumpy (reallllllly grumpy), tired, weak, the list goes ON and ON. This time around I am SO much better! I am only on day two but this seems to easy to be true. We went to the mall last night and it was tough because we walked by the food court and I was literally drooling. We don’t ever eat that crap food but it smelled, looked and seemed SO yummy :-P The salt water flush seems to be working pretty well also. I took a laxative last night that we had in our medicine drawer and it seems to be helping a lot too. I DON’T feel light or that I have lost ANY weight yet which is fine I think, as I know i’ll start shedding the lbs maybe on day 4 or 5. I actually feel bloated… More than usual. I think it is because I am drinking SO much liquid my tummy is so full! I added salt to the lemonade and it is SOOOO good. I actually really enjoy it :-)
Good luck to all and hang in there!! I know it’ll be well worth it in the end!

Ok. Morning 1 of day 1 of my Master Cleanse. I am feeling focused and excited. My intention for this cleanse is to heal my addiction to sugar and carbohydrates, which I feel will help my overall feeling of lethargy and cure my tendancy to binge drink ( I do not believe I am an alcoholic because I can go days & weeks without drinking and am fine, also I hate vodka and hard liquor I only binge on beer and wine which I feel is part of my sugar addiction) I also intend to heal my digestive system and my kidneys and liver, lose the heavyness in my abdomen, nd purge and release anything that does not serve me mentally, physically, and spiritually. Thank you for this forum, because I belive it is important to declare your intentions for a thing, before embarking on something difficult. I intend to add something here everyday, and to use this as a motivator. Good Luck everyone, and please post your intentions for the cleanse, as I may need to add to my list!

This is my 2nd day on the MC and I feel great, but I’m craving horrible stuff. Last time i couldn’t make it past day 3 – I vomited while pumping gas and i said that’s it for me! i really want to just jump start a healthy eating lifestyle and lose weight – scale says i’ve lost 5lbs but that could all just be wishy washy. I just wish there wasn’t yummy food smells around or i wish i didn’t have to feed my family (3 kids under 7) – i want to eat with them!

monica April 13, 2010 at 12:15 am

Monica April 15, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I am staring the MC on Monday and was wondering if I could use organic Agave in place of the Maple Syrup???? Thanks.

Adrione April 15, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Hi,

I’m going into my 5th day of the cleanse & realized I was doing it wrong. I was using lemon juice instead of lemons. Should I continue the diet & start with lemons the remaining of the days or start all over?

cecilia/sissy April 23, 2010 at 9:31 am

In my part of the world the Grade B Maple Syrup is not easy to come by. Could I subtitute it with true honey to wit pure and fresh honey with no adulteration.?

Kimberly April 23, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have been searching for a cleanse for sometime now, after research I am excited about getting ready to try this one. The reviews are great and the benefits sound good too, although I know it will be difficult I have confidence in myself. I will be starting on Weds. April 28th, so this weekend I will be preparing several meals ahead a time for my family so I don’t have to look at any food and they can just pull the homemade frozen meals out and have dinner, while not disturbing my cleanse. I am really looking forward to this cleanse, my body feels very sluggish and unhealthy. Wish me luck!!

Sydney April 23, 2010 at 6:01 pm

This is GREAT stuff. I consider myself very lucky, despite my mother’s bad habits, to have taught myself the right way. I am always experimenting with alternative ways to cleanse my body and this seems like a good choice. I love your story. I too have a blog..so feel free to check it out! Not many readers yet so I would love to add someone to my list! I am thinking of starting the cleanse after my bike race (27 miles) this weekend. I can’t start before or I am sure I will sufferon the bike! Anyway, I enjoyed reading and I would love to hear more!

Debbie April 26, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I am on day one of the MC. I did it a few years back so I know I just need to get to day three and I will be fine. I am taking the cayenne pills instead of putting it directly in the juice – works for me. To all doing the cleanse stay focused it is possible to get through it.

D Williams April 30, 2010 at 6:07 pm

Havent started my cleanse yet cant wait to get started.

wendy May 1, 2010 at 10:51 am

Very excited to start the cleanse for the first time. Wanted to try it for 7 days.
Didnt have any of the nausea, cramping, headaches, or vommiting I was expecting, but after 3 days I craved food so much I just gave in. Can I start back up right away again or do I have to wait?

camie May 2, 2010 at 5:20 pm

I’m starting the cleanse tomorrow. I would like to stay on it for 10 days. I did it before for 7 days. The first 3 days were the hardest. hope I can do it.

Marie May 5, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I’m preparing to start the cleanse and would like to know if it is ok to take my vitamins?

Anonymous May 6, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Tanya May 11, 2010 at 10:23 am

cece May 13, 2010 at 3:13 am

This is day 2 of the MC and I feel good, but I just have a question I have not had a regular bowel movement since I started, Is this normal? I was also told that I can eat fruits and veggies while on the MC is that true? I also drink a peppermint tea along with the MC maybe I’m doing this all wrong.

renee May 13, 2010 at 5:49 pm

I just learned about this diet today as I was on the internet looking for a healthy weight loss program. I read all the info and the blogs and I went to buy the necessary ingredients. I plan to begin tomorrow. I am hoping to gain some energy and shed some lbs. My goal is 10 days. If I can get there, I will try for more. Wish me luck and I will let you know how it goes.

renee May 13, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Marie,
I am not an expert but I think it would be a waste to take vitamins as you are cleansing your intestines. I don’t think it would hurt you, it’s just that they would come out as soon as they go into your system. Good luck

Nad May 14, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Hello & thanks for all the information. I am planning to do the MC in a couple of days but I’m still preparing. A nurse who does Colon Cleansing told me that she does not recommend the MC because it leaves fecal matter on the colon that she would have to wash off. I don’t know if it’s because she doesn’t want to lose me as a client or if this is so. I belief in the MC but I need advise regarding what she said.

lilly May 16, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Hey I am starting tomorrow I am motivated and determined to be shedding off some weight and stomach I am hoping to see my abs and work on getting some packs. I am only 13 but I hope it will work out for me because all of my friends are so tiny and I feel like the biggest one all the time. it’s terrible. And whenever I sit my rolls are just there and it bothers me so much. But I have all the ingredients bought I spent 25 dollars but it is all worth it. I had to buy no.1 maple syrup because I coudnt find any grade 3 maple syrup will that work

Emily May 17, 2010 at 6:02 am

This is day four of my journey of the “master” and I feel really good.. no food so far and to tell you the truth I am not craving anything either. I worked out harder last night then I have in the past and generally feel better. I guess what is working for me is that fact of the money aspect that I put into this and that is the whole motivation for me to stay on it along with the health. Good luck all!!

Pamala May 17, 2010 at 8:06 pm

I just want you to know that i am on my 6th day and i feel better i have lost over 15 pounds so far i already have people wanting the recipe my husband is also doing it with me

lorraine May 18, 2010 at 4:30 pm

today is my 4th day of master cleanse. which consists of ;
2 TBSP organic lemon juice
2 TBSP organic maple syrup (any grade) NO subsituting honey.
1/10 tsp. cayanne pepper
10 oz. spring or purified H2o
do not subsitute any of the above.
6-12 of these a day
herbal laxative tea in am/pm
2 tsp. uniodized sea salt in 4 cups of H20 in am

lorraine May 18, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Today the 4th day. I’m surprised i’m craving food! I chose to do MC as a fast to break myself of gluttony because i am a fastfood, junk food, donut, cookie, and cake junkie! I wanted God to change my weakness for unhealthy eating so I would have control over my urges. I have NEVER been successful on diets or fasts but this time I know my right attitude to please God is the Key!! The Lord is giving me strength to complete this fast. Its truly amazing how He’s working in me one day at a time!

Vancvrgirl May 19, 2010 at 11:07 am

I am on day 5 of the Master Cleanse and I have to say I feel better than I have in months! I am definitely more tired than normal, but my naturopath actually recommended I do the Master Cleanse for health reasons and said that the best remedy for a broken body is sleep so I allow myself the extra hours of sleep I feel I need right now. I did download Raylen’s book and it has helped me tremendously!

Morgan May 21, 2010 at 8:16 am

The cravings are what always stopped me from completing the master cleanse. Now I am on day 5 and I’ve never made it this far. What I did was eat fresh fruits and vegatables 4 days before I started. I would eat them 5 times a day. I also brew up the cleanse recipe and replace a meal or two with a 10 ounce serving. The day before I started I only ate breakfast and drank the lemonade the reminder of the day. Then the day after I started the complete cleanse with the Sal water.
This helped me get used to eating less gradually and help my cravings.

Morgan May 21, 2010 at 8:32 am

My biggest help with cravings was getting those ice pop things you fill with juice. I’d freeze my lemonade and when I felt I needed a treat a master cleanse icepop did just the trick.

Alex May 21, 2010 at 12:13 pm

I am currentlt on day 5 of the cleanse. I find the morning is the hardest with cramps and the bowel movements. I tend to get most of my food cravings in the morning but if i get past the morning the rest of the day is great. I have lost a total of 9lbs and even more determined to make it to the 10th day. I hated the salt water flush so i started just drinking the senna smooth move tea and 4 phyllus husk pills with lots of water instead. They dont flush you out as quickly as the salt but they work just as well. The salt flush is a bit challenging especially if you have to go to work that day. Expect it to work within the hour and its nonstop. can be a bit embarresing to excuse yourself every few minutes.

All in all the benefits are amazing. I have more eneregy then ever and my skin has changed in just 5 days. I feel so empowered to go back and eat healthy.

Note: if you can an espon salt bath or 15 min in the sauna are amazing cures for body aches and headaches plus it relaxes you and relieves a bit of the crabiness
Good luck everyone!!!!

honeydipp May 25, 2010 at 8:40 am

I was on the master cleanse for 8 days. No solid foods, just the smooth groove tea, lemonade and salt cleanse daily. At first, I saw I was losing a pound or two. On the 8th day, I noticed I had only lost 2lbs. How do I not eat any solid foods, have bowel movements and only lose 2lbs? I was so discouraged that I stopped. Not to mention my feet are bloated due to the salt intake. What did I do wrong?

sandy May 28, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I have done the mc twice and both time i struggled. However, i did survive both for the duration of 10 days. I suggest anyone using the mc to get the book and read it prior to starting the cleanse because there are many questions you will have but the book will answer all those questions. If you are doing it fight the battle and overcome the struggle because the reward is Great and you will look great.

Marlene May 30, 2010 at 11:12 am

I am going to start the MC diet tomorrow with a coworker. I did the diet before and lost 12lbs. I remember the first 2-3 days were the most difficult. My plan is to do10-21 days. I am doing it for the health benefits and weight loss. I am about 20 lbs over weight. I want to use it also to stop my sweet cravings and to jump start a healthier lifestyle.

Theresa May 30, 2010 at 11:44 pm

I am starting MC on Tuesday, June 1st. I need all the motivation I can get. I would like to do it for 14 days. Is anyone starting on Tuesday>

Sandy June 1, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Day 4 of first Master Cleanse.

I am VERY proud of myself for doing this, but it’s been hard, especially today. I want to eat something! I make my drink in 1.5 liter bottles, by the way – it’s easier for me – 10 tablespoons Grade B Maple Syrup, 10 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper. I just mixed my second bottle of the day.

As far as questions about substituting, the answer is “no”. No to honey, no to regular tea, no to deviating from the steps. My nutritionist and I have talked at length, and I’m doing this exactly as I’m supposed to, and if you’re going to bother doing it, do it right! Herbal laxative tea at night, 30 oz salt water flush in the morning, and the drink and water throughout the day. I’ve been lucky – no headaches, no side effects other than wanting to eat something…but that’s not hunger, it’s habit.

Justice June 2, 2010 at 9:38 am

I’m on my second day of the cleanse and I have a headache so bad I feel like jumping in front of a bus during rush hour. Even only two days in I see results. One this morning my ankles weren’t swollen, and I dont feel so lazy, yes tired which is expected but not lazy. I’m not weighing my self for another 30days. I just go by how my body feel (great) and my clothes. I’m happy to have a desk job becuase these cramps are murder. I’m 5f9 320lbs and I need to take care of me being the oldest of 5 in my early 30’s it definatley time. Please note I haven’t did the swf is it really nessecary and is it nessecary daily. Thanks Justice NYC

fammi June 3, 2010 at 1:12 am

This is my 2nd day of MC, and i am ok with this . I had very small bowel movements. I am not doing SWF as noniodized salt is not available and the senna laxative tea i was not able to swallow because i gag alot and liquids of these sorts dont go inside. I take laxative drops ,hope these will help.

fammi June 3, 2010 at 1:15 am

Please tell me if i am doing it right or its just waste of time. Ireally want to loose weight and detoxify myself. Can somebody answer . Thanx

Barbara, Las Vegas June 3, 2010 at 9:19 am

I am now on Day 9 of the Master Cleanseand feel wonderful. I have Multiple Sclerosis and have been very fatigued. When I started this cleanse I had a headache for days and a sinus infection as well. On the 2nd day I lost my headache and my sinus didn’t bother me anymore. Also, I had my very first good nights sleep in months. I woke up refreshed, not my normal sluggish self!!! The first 3 days were tough with not eating since I automatically we go to the kitchen when it was my regular meal or snack time. However, I had a big project I was doing (putting up crown moulding) which took my mind off food! I actually went to two BBQ’s with my husband (it was Memorial weekend) and I didn’t crave a thing!!! I had my lemonade and water and enjoyed the aroma around me!!! I’ve lost 8 lbs. and plan and doing this every year!!! I’ve never felt better…..

noreen June 4, 2010 at 7:44 am

i really want to start the diet, with my sister every day we postpond it to tomorrow but with will power i am sure we shall start and complete it.

emi June 5, 2010 at 11:08 pm

just completed my first day on master cleanse..i’m really tired, but other than that, it’s ok..i am craving real food already and haven’t had a BM yet and I drank the salt water this morning and the laxative tea tonight..so i am kind of worried :/ but I am trying to go for atleast 14 days and go from there. I had a little stomach achhe today and a head ache this morning

Janette June 6, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I just finished my first master cleanse and found the whole process to be rather unremarkable. My conclusion is this cleanse is better for those who have not cleansed their bodies before or are not in very good health. I have lost about three lbs. not alot for 10 days starvation. My stomach never did stop growling! I have done other cleanses and have decided I much prefer the cleanse by Stand Process, it is equally effective and alot easier.

Ima June 8, 2010 at 9:17 am

Morgan, thanks for the breakdown of how you started the MC. I think this will help me have a better result, as I am a foodie and doing the MC mainly to lose weight.

leah June 9, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Hi there!!

I just started the Master Cleanse today!! I feel great and when I didn’t want to drink the Lemonade, I made myself yummy decaf herbal tea. I meditated on how many days I should do the cleanse and for me, I came up with 4 days. I think it’s important to trust yourself. Ask your body what it needs and go from there. Just because they say 10 days, doesn’t mean you have to go that distance. Do what is good for you :-)

Sue June 10, 2010 at 12:03 pm

I’m going to start the MC on Monday. Will it have any effect on the RX arimidex and detrol. Arimidex is for breast cancer and detrol is overactive bladder. I have the recipe, but I’m not sure how many to drink a day.

lacrecia June 11, 2010 at 11:55 am

Punam June 11, 2010 at 1:57 pm
