The Master Cleanse and Weight Loss

by Raylen on June 15, 2009

The most common questions I get on this blog are about the master cleanse and weight loss so I thought I would take a minute and answer some of those today. If the master cleanse is something you would like to try I would encourage you to sign up for my free newsletter at the bottom of this post, when you do I’ll email you a free guide for doing the master cleanse.

I was going through these blogs. Suddenly a question came in my mind…I want to try MC specifically for the weight loss..but one of the blogs says that it is temporary.we really need to work out to loose weight.is it a reality that the weight loss is temporary in this case as i am not fatty i just want to loose weight from hip and the waist line as i have developed flabs….so please help.

While you can lose a significant amount of weight on the master cleanse, and keep most of it off (you’ll gain back some water weight) the real weight loss benefits come after you finish the master cleanse. Most people will find that they no longer consume as much food as they did prior to the master cleanse, and the food they do crave is usually much healthier.

Here’s some more info on losing weight after the master cleanse

Next we have a reader who wants to accomplish the opposite. They want to know how to do the master cleanse without losing weight:

I am interested in the cleanse for removal of toxins and NOT for weight. loss. I have always been thin with a high metabolism. I don’t want to lose wt. is the master cleanse still for me? I am worried about doing it for 10 days straight, not only for convenience factors but because my metabolism is unusual and i don’t want to lose weight or wind up feeling faint, etc., especially when I’m working.

This is a good question that doesn’t get talked about much. Here’s a post I made that will help you do the master cleanse without losing too much weight

I try to buy the the e-book but all links are not working how can I order?

Home4us9 July 4, 2009 at 1:22 am

I really want to use “Smart Water” to make my lemonade. It’s going to be so convenient. What’s wrong with electrolytes? I’m not ready to purchase a water filter as yet, and I don’t trust the “filtered” bottled water. Is the pitcher filter that can be purchased at Sears (I’ve forgotten the name) okay to use initially until I work out w/my husband what, if any, water filter he’d like to install for our family? Thanks.

I have already done the 10 day cleansing now I want to do the lemonade diet for weight loss, I am going to try replacing lunch with the lemonade, do I only drink the lemonade or do I need to take laxative teas or the Hoodia? Thanks

My husband and I are serious about doing the 10 day cleanse for continued health reasons as we age, and I know my husband will most likely continue for the weight loss. My crazy question…I work 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Will there be days in the beginning that I need to be home (near restroom facilities) and not at the office??? That is my biggest concern at this time…

Nadette Setorwu November 11, 2009 at 8:41 am

I’m on my 4th day of the cleanse and i haven’t lost any weight at all.its my 1st time doing this and i eased myself into the cleanse as advised in the book.i drink 7 cups of lemonade,2 litres of water and salt flushes twice daily.

The Dr Max Powers “15 Day Cleanse” flatten my stomach and I am convinced helped me lose more weight even when I wasnt eating perfectly(stupid schwarma). Seven pounds in two weeks (tomorrow is my last day) is pretty darn good if you ask me. It’s inexpensive which is also a plus.

Not everything you lose will be pure fat because thats not what this does it gets rid of the toxins, excess water and bloat and make your body run more efficiently which then makes it easier for to lose weight. I will definitely try the Dr Max 15 Day Cleanse again in 6 months. . .

Vicky January 10, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Hi, I am on day 4 of the MC now, I allowed myself some raw vegetables on day 1 and day 2, day 3 I ate less… I own a small business and have to work a lot so I could not allow myself to completely nuts without food. I noticed on day 3 I actually was full from half a salad of raw vegetables and lemon juice. Now I am on day 4 and I feel like I am not remotely losing weight. Is it because I have been eating the vegetables? Although I heard that Beyonce ate vegetables when she did hers. I feel like my face is particularly bloated. Also note that I just got my period so I am also suffering from Menstrual symptoms.

shelley January 17, 2010 at 5:58 pm

I don’t like lemonade at all. Can I use Limes or Oranges instead.

Day one in the master cleanse and I’m pretty exited and this will be my first cleanse ever!! So here it goes my journey with my first cleanse!!! I do have a question, I’m a regular runner so I’m wondering can I continue running or should I stop working out during the master cleanse??

Looking forward to your feedback! ?

Erica February 23, 2010 at 12:47 am

Because I don’t have time to squeeze the lemons in the morning, can I use a Lemon Juice Squeeze Bottle Sicilia ? It’s not a concentrate and contains no sugar.

Hey, I read alot about the master cleanse, and today is my first day trying it out, well actually i didnt buy a water filter, but i am using gallons of bottled water, hoping thats ok! and also i bought the epsom salt to use as my laxative. im going to try that out tonight to see if it flushes everything out. :)

Debra May 3, 2010 at 11:00 am

Hi i jus started the Master Cleanse today. I already drank my first glass of the Lemonade this morning, then I drank a 1 glass of water with 1 tblspoon of Epsom salt. Honestly it tasted soo bad! I thought I was going to throw up… But I couldnt find the Sea Salt yesterday in the store so I just used the epsom salt, I read somewhere that it is as effective. So far its been 20 mins and i havent had any scary bowel Movements. Now I am about to drink my second glass of the lemonade. I also have this Trim-Maxx Tea that is a laxative tea! should I drink that tonight, if the epsom salt doesnt work? Please let me know. Im really trying to be on the right level to achieve the cleansing and weightloss.

CAN A RUNNER CONTINUE TO RUN ON THE MASTER CLEANSE DIET?

vegan June 13, 2010 at 4:00 am

I started this diet about two weeks ago and I am shedding wieght. I’ll be honest. I drink 16 oz for breakfast, 16 oz for lunch and dinner . I graze during the day on mint tea. I have to eat so I have steamed leafy vegetables and 16 oz of the lemonade for dinner. I watch my sugar intake so I subtracted the maple syrup. I am losing about a pound a 3 pounds week a day I am excited. Not hungry at all I am commited untill my goal weight is reached.

ArmstrongA June 22, 2010 at 1:05 am

I’m thinking about doing the cleanse because I always, always eat shitty junky food. I know my body will be so happy getting rid of toxic and chemical. Sigh… I don’t know if I can stay on this diet for 3 days…. I tried this like 4 years ago but able to stay on it only….8 hours…how sad is that?! I remembered being sooo hungry that I was shaking. Any suggestions?

Cathy June 30, 2010 at 5:01 pm

To vegan…if you are eating ANYTHING…you are NOT doing a cleanse. NO food should be used for this to be effective.

marlene July 2, 2010 at 7:40 am

Started the MC this morning. Made my morning portion last night… i think the cayenne marinating in the lemon juice, water and syrop has made it hotter than it really should be. I suggest to everyone trying this to only put in the cayenne right before you start drinking it… and don’t put too much in, you’ll choke!
I’m doing okay as far as hunger goes. Although it’s hard because I go get coffee for my bosses and work downtown near lots of restuarants… not fun! I just remind myself of my goals every time i see food. I’m only doing a three day cleanse to see how it works (and because maple syrop is SO expensive!)
Good luck to everyone, stay positive and don’t loose sight of your goals!

Jim August 29, 2010 at 11:29 am

It sure doesn’t sound like the majority of people are having much luck with this! I’m reading through the blogs and many are saying they haven’t lost weight, haven’t experienced the elimination, gag on the salt-water laxatives… doesn’t sound too promising.
I was just trying to research this diet to see by what premise it would work. Lemon juice? Maple syrup? Cayenne pepper? What magic does this combination offer? I would think any diet that forces starvation for a period of ten days is going to be a success if you stick to it. The problem is, you will gain it all back (and more) as soon as you’re off the diet.
I’m not so sure about this one…. sounds like another one with the cabbage soup from long ago I recall….

I just recently went thru breast cancer I finished chemo & radiation and sadly GAINED 50 pounds which of course has left me deeply depressed not cause the cancer & losing my breast but because I gained 50 pounds and feel extremely uncomfortable and just GROSS! I’m determined to do this fasting just to help me along with losing weight. Can you please let me know if this is safe for me and if there anything else I should do to help me succeed in losing this weight … I’m excited to start!

sharon September 8, 2010 at 12:18 pm

I did the MC in 08 for 13 days and lost 27 lbs. I was sick at the time and desperate to feel better. I didn’t have problems sticking to it because I didn’t have a issue sticking with it because I felt soo bad. By the 3rd day I felt amazing! my skin did clear up. If you can stand it the salt water has to be takin everyday. The key is to chug it while the water is still luke warm. Its a little easier with a straw. I have to say though that I gained that 27 lbs back with additional only because I became cocky and lazy!!! This will help to jump start healthier eating habits that have to be for a healthier life change. I am going try it again!!!

Robert December 7, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Howdy, Folks!
Okay, some clarifications… The MC Diet is not meant for weight loss, it’s meant to cleanse your body of toxins and sort of kick-start it for when you “Actually start dieting”. :)
If you aren’t really losing weight, it could be because you didn’t do the three days of intenseness thing. Yes, you have to exercise like a maniac and work really hard three day before you actually start this thing, or else you’ll just be starving yourself and later gaining weight. Good job.
To all of the poor souls on this thing: I wish you the best of luck, keep healthy, exercise, and seriously keep your attitude happy! :) It will do wonders to your mind and body. ‘Later!

Bryan December 12, 2010 at 6:39 pm

I can definitely attest that after the cleanse I am craving much less fatty foods and coffee especially. I used to constantly be craving junk foods and sugars, but after doing my cleanse for only 7 days I’ve lost 10 pounds and eat much better. I also have tons more energy than i’ve ever had before. That is the most suprising by far. Even if you guys want to do the Master Cleanse for weight loss but arent sure if you’d lose the desired amount, trust me, the energy gained is well worth it.

I did the cleanse for 9 days, and already lost 12 lbs. It works, if you stick to it. I think I would have lost more, if I hadn’t cheated a few times. Will take a rest after my last day (tomrrow) for a week, and start again for 15 days.

David Perez March 26, 2011 at 2:36 am

I am 25 years old and I have been doing the Master Cleanse for the past four years, usually around springtime. I have never been fat but I did look into the cleanse to shake off that few extra pounds around my stomach (my general problem area) I have been reading everyone’s comments and alot of you are simply doing the whole thing wrong, sorry to say.

I will say that it was especially hard the first couple times I tried it. I love food and I have always had a higher metabolism than most so I eat alot in general so for me to give up food for 10 days is extremely hard, for anyone really.

I’d like to help others do the cleanse properly and also give you some useful tips.

1. Be mentally strong and pumped for it, if you are not, you will fail. sorry. Being strong and disciplined is crucial.

2. You CANNOT eat anything during the 10 days or even the 2-3 days following the cleanse. This is also crucial. The whole point of the cleanse is for your body to take a break from digesting and breaking down foods and focus on everything else. Eating anything, even fruits and/or salads will take away from the cleanse and you are simply just dieting at that point so don’t even bother doing the cleanse if you think eating less that you were is gonna work, sure you will lose weight, you are dieting! but you wont get the benefits from the cleanse.

3. Do not got to restaurants with friends, or be around people who are eating. We are human, we will be tempted, being around food makes it extremely difficult. While I think its silly to get rid of the food at home, simpy avoid being around it and you should be ok. Also, I kid you not, the TV is hell during the cleanse, I Fast foward any commercials because the minute you see a juicy hamburger on TV, I promise you will want to quit and go after that yummy burger. so be careful with what you watch on tv, sounds silly but its true.

4. The ingredients are crucial as well. I did tons of research prior to my cleanse and took in notes from all the websites and blogs I could find as well as consult my doctor. Also most of the websites give both a whole day’s worth as well as servings. I find that the whole day worth is much easier to do and prepare instead of having to do 3-4 drinks a day. So the things you will need is: 1. PURIFIED WATER or water free of chemicals, Cannot be tap water since it has chemicals in it! You will need TONS of water. I buy ten 1 Gallon containers to start me off with and usually end up getting up to 10 more for the whole cleanse. Water is key in this cleanse. and it’s cheap so stock up! 2. GRADE B MAPLE SYRUP. Has to be Grade B, not A. Also cannot be the maple syrup you get at the grocery store, that is artificial crap. Grade B Maple Syrup can be found at your local health food store. They are the most expenise thing you will get and usually come in a bottle of 12 oz, You will need 5 of them and I payed $12.00 for each one. 3. ORGANIC LEMONS!!! has to be organic as others will have pestacides and again, defeated the purpose of the cleanse. Also it HAS to be freshly squeezed each morning as it will start losing its vitamins within 8-10 hours from being squeezed. 4. Organic powdered cayenne pepper, this is inexpensive and you only need a very little amount. 5. Epson Salt. You need some sort of laxative and I find epson salt to be the most effective. Most websites mentioned sea salts but I prefer epson and its cheap. If you prefer though, I see nothing wrong with Sea salts, I simply didn;t want to to pay as much for it and like I said, Epson salt is more effective. 5. Herbal Laxative Teas (This is more of an option, I ddnt get any this time around but for some, It might me a nice break from the lemonade during midday etc)

So these are my measurements for a whole days worth supply

60 oz of PURIFIED WATER
6 oz of FRESHLY SQUEEZED ORGANIC LEMONS
6 oz of ORGANIC GRADE B Maple Syrup
1/2 Teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper

I have a strainer to get the pure lemon juice (as you do not want seeds and/or pulp floating about) I buy about 5 days worth of lemons first (you need 3-6 per day depending on size) I keep 6 out to rippen daily and the rest in the fridge. You can buy the full 10 days worth if you like but I like them fresher. so I only buy 5 days worth and then the rest later. Make sure to refrigerate the maple syrup upon opening it. I have a 80 oz jug that I mix it all in and take w ith with me to my job and basically drink out of it all day. In addition to that, you need to be drinking as much water as you can, still purified. I usually take big gulps of the lemonade whenever I drink it and then follow it immediatly with water as the lemon will break down your teeth enamel if in your mouth for too long etc. plus the cayenne pepper has a kick to it so the water helps.

I also drink about 12 oz of water with about 2-3 teaspoons of epson salt every morning, first thing in the morning, and I don’t even start drinking the lemonade until my first bowel movement which usually occurs within 2 hours from drinking the epson salt. I will say that I hate drinking it! its nasty as hell but its important. Best way to do it, chug it down as fast as you can and water at room temperature is best, since cold water brings out the taste of the salt even more and makes it sooooo much harder to drink. So every morning I mix the water with the salt until the salt is completely disolved and then I chug that baby down as fast as I can follwed by chuging some more water to get rid of the horrid taste in my mouth.

Bowel movements occur within 2 hours, sometimes as soon as 30 minutes depending on your body etc. Im grateful I have a private bathroom at work because I would be quite uncomfortable using a public bathroom as the noise is not pleasant, think diharea but with mostly water coming out. I’m avergaing about 4-5 bathroom trips per day, the first being the most intense and as they day progresses and depending on my water intake, are usually quick, you will get the urge to go, so go when you can. But after the first one, you won’t poop yourself I promise, it is controllable.

So now let me tell you about my experiances starting with the first time I did it. and also to give you an idea of my body dimensions. I am 6ft 2in tall. and I average a weight of 175 to 200. I fluctuate with that weight every year. 200 is the highest I have been and that was only this current year. I started the cleanse 5 days ago (I’m on my 6th day right now) and I’ve lost 8 pounds so far and my stomach is drastically losing the extra flab and getting flat. but I didnt start seeing the results until day 3. Anyway here is how it went year to year.

First Time: I lasted 7-8 days total and I did it all wrong, I did lose weight yes because I tried to follow it propery but I cheated often. I ate almost a whole chicken (I kid you not, I was starving) and I vomitted promptly after, part by choice part not. The chicken was soooo good especially after no food for 3 days but it affected my stomach even worst. I also kept cheating often but usually small little bites of food here and there, not whole meals. I again cheated on the 6th or 7th day when my ex w and I went out to eat at the Outback restaurant and I simply could not resist and ended up having soup, bread, and crab Legs and The onion blossom. Again, eating it felt sooooo good but as soon as we walked out, I vomitted most of it out. I quit the diet a coule days after and didnt even bother to wean off, simply ate less than before and nothing too extreme. I didn;t puke after but I did have some bad stomach aches due to not follwing it properly. I didn’t care as much then as I only had a few extra pounds and I lost it all so quitting was easy. But had my father in law not made the chicken and then tempted me with it, and had we not gone out to eat, I would have lasted I think. At least I wouldnt have cheated. So back to my earlier comments, stay away from food! its simply too hard not to eat if its right in fron of you.

Second time and third time: I didnt cheat as much. I would take small bites out of food and nibble on the tiniest pieces of chicken just to get the taste but really I was torturing myself by doing so. even the tinest of bites or food forces your body to stop focusing on fixing itself and digest the food. Also I did break down the 3rd time ONCE and ate Ceviche which consists of diced tomates, onion, cilantro, shrimp and salt and pepper. I thought since it was healthy it would be ok. I was wrong, once again I puked shortly after. But again, I put myself in the situation where people were eating all around me. Also the 2nd time I did it, when I cheated much less than the first. I lasted the full 10 days and around the 7th or 8th day, after pooping mostly water, I did excrete a long string of thick brown mucus plaque. This is absolutly normal and is to be expected, this is what has been stuck to your intestines for years and had been building up. While its extremely gross, its a sign that the cleanse is working. Do not be alarmed, it didnt hurt, simply felpt like a bowel movement. one my 3rd time, I lasted 8 days and gave up as I was staying at my aunts who cooks every single day and simply made it impossible for me to keep going but I did lose the weight I wanted, so again quitting was easy. I also did not wean off yet again

I am now on my fourth year, and Im on day 6. I have not cheated ONCE! and I dont plan on eating anyting. I told my family and freinds to please not temp me with food and I was mentally prepared to stick with it since I was at my heaviest when I started it, which is 200 pounds. I also made no plans to go out with friends or family as I do not want to be around food and hey, its working, I am not hungry nor do I want to eat. I did see a few commercials on tc for Mcdonalds and Burger kind and those gave me slight hunger pains but I am determined! I have lost about 5-7 pounds since I started but only really started seeingresults after day 3 and then drastically after that. My stomach is not flat yet but it sure as hell is on its way. my love handles are slimming down and even my face is getting slimmer along with my pecs getting a little smaller. My skin looks great but it really always has, just has a little extra glow to it and I feel great, not only because my cloths arent as tight but becausemy body feels great. I wake up energetic and focused. Day one and two were hard of course as your body is crying out for food but by day 3-4 you will feel fine. I also plan of weaning off properly this time, day 11 is purley orange juice and tonsof water, day 12 is same but with broth and light soup introduced, no meats, day 13, same asbefore but can have a salad and/or fruit. by day 14 you can eat regularly but avoid meat, especially beed and diary for a good 2-4 weeks. Chicken I find is not too harsh on your stomach after day 15.

I think that being away from food is helping of course but also I have never been this determined to do it properly since I feel like I havent before. I feel extremely pround of myself for making it this far without even the tiniest bit of cheating and I fully expect to finish the ten days as well as the 3 days to slowly go back to eating regularly.

My body already craves healthier food. The thought of certain things I would eat before disgust me now, like beef burgers. And it is true what the websites say, you lose alot of weight yes but its after the cleanse when you can either slowly gain it all back or keep it off permanetly, all depends on how you choose to eat after. I do not drink any Soda, just juices and I also do not eat beef from any fast food places. Just those two things alone help me mantain an average weight. My problem is portions. I can eat in one meal what really should be 3 fulls meals, so that is why I got to be 200 pounds.

I am sure not everyone will read this but I sure do hope it helps someone. The Master cleanse is a great thing I believe and I will continue to do it every year, only now I am doing it properly. if anyone needs further help or has any questions, I would be more than happy to help.

David
