Managing The Master Cleanse Side Effects

by Raylen on December 12, 2006

Hello, I hope you’re all doing well.

There’s been lots of good feed back on this blog. It’s nice to read about your experiences with the master cleanse, and your comments have prompted the writing of todays newsletter.

It’s about the side effects of the master cleanse.

When you do the master cleanse you’re almost certainly going experience some side effects. Your body will be going through a major detox, and it’s going to affect you.

Fatigue, aches, and headaches are the most common, but each persons experience is unique.

There are some things you can do to lesson the negative effects of the master cleanse, but before I get that I think it’s important to restate the advice I give in my master cleanse guide….

—————————————————————————————
Always pay attention to your body, and don’t be afraid to stop in the middle of the Master Cleanse if you start to feel any adverse effects. Remember, the goal is good health, and you should not jeopardize your current health in the obtainment of that goal.
—————————————————————————————

I know how hard it can be to stop in the middle of the cleanse when you’ve got yourself pumped up to finish it through, but if you’re not comfortable with how you feel sometimes it’s the best thing to do.

But to help lesson those uncomfortable feeling you can follow these 3 tips…

1. Take it easy while on the cleanse. You want to avoid physically demanding activities and stressful activates. The master cleanse does take a toll on your body, and you won’t have the strength and energy you normally do so you’ll want to take it easy.

2. Drink lots of filtered water. You can drink your fill of water, but it’s important you drink filtered water. Tap water and bottled water contain chemicals, and the master cleanse is all about detoxing your body not putting toxic material back into your body.

To save on filtered water you can use a home filtration system like the aquasana that which gives you filtered water for just 9 cents a gallon. Here’s a link to the aquasana web site www.aquasana.com

3. Make sure your adding enough maple syrup and lemon. The master cleanse ingredients provide your body with nutrition and it’s important that you don’t leave anything out or skimp on certain items.

Following these steps should help lesson the side effects of the master cleanse, but please remember not to push your body to hard.

I hope this helps makes your master cleanse experience a little more pleasurable

The only side effect that I experienced was a rash throughout my body, Now I don’t think that is normal! Is it? I had to stop by the 7th day because I couldn’t stand the Itching, but I did lose 10lbs and gained lot’s of energy.

Diana February 8, 2008 at 4:38 am

I have a question, is it safe to go through the master cleanse when you have your period also?

Julie February 13, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Hey guys I want to start the master cleanse but I can’t find the grade B maple syurp anywhere, will it hurt if I use grade A?

Heather February 18, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Hi my name is Heather,

I am 24 an in normal health an a mother of two, I have been on the cleanse now for finishing my 3rd day. I was wondering if someone could answer me about when you know your body is done. I have heard a couple of things. My husband is going to start his cleanse on tuesday, but he is insisting that I go the full ten days. I just am so used to having a celery stick or a carrot for a snack. So my main thing is when or if you know your body is done? I don’t have as many bowl movements as most ppl an never have, is that okay as well?

Heather February 18, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Julie

you can get the maple syrup @ humblebeehealth.com

Heather February 18, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Stephanie,

I got the pepper already packaged, I can’t handle spice at all an these seem to help, I did however still have the acid reflux sometimes. but it seemed to pass by the middle of the second day.

I have been on the Master Cleanser for the past fifteen day and I want you to know I feel great. I have been doing this since 2006. I was really glad to hear about the sea salt flush. I prefer this much better that ht eherbal tea, because the tea tend to give me cramps. I am going for 21 days. I have always done 10 days, but htis time it is a spiritual fast and I felt the Master Cleanser would be much healthier for me. Hang in ther all of you who are on the diet. DON’T QUIT.

I was on the Master Cleanse for only 5 days. I did loose weight and felt great but now my menstral cycle is late. I’m wondering if it’s related to the Cleanse. Did anyone have any similar symptoms?

leiflynn turberfield February 29, 2008 at 7:21 am

just wondering if it is common to vomit due to the lemonade mixture, i know i did shortly after the first intake and find it hard to bring myself to try again. Any suggestion

I just finished the Master Cleanse it was absolutely wonderful for my body. I lost 11 pounds and it felt wonderful because I did not feel bloated at all I felt so clean, it was amazing. I plan it carefully I work in my journal everyday and that helped motivate me. I was determined to finish and I did I told my friends what I was going to do and they were like a support group for me. I understand you cannot stay on it for more than 10days but I do want to do it again and I was wondering I can do it. I finish Feb 29th so I was thinking if I can do it again the last 10 days of April. Please tell me if this would be too soon. The only side effect I would say I had was a bad headache and I am not sure that came from the cleanse I think it was because my office was so hot one day I had a headache, but I really enjoy being on the cleanse and I did not miss food at all.

sandy wilson March 21, 2008 at 8:51 am

No where in the master cleanse does it speak of what you do about your medication while cleansing. i take lexapro and wonder if you are to continue your meds while on the cleanse, no one out there seems to have any information on this subject. hope to get an answer before i start. thanks sandy

I was very skeptical.
My husband was the one to introduce me to the Master Cleanse. I recently lost over 18olbs. through diet and a lot of exercise, but I was struggling with headaches. I went to specialist and was given every sort of migrane medication that was available but nothing worked. I tried the master cleanse and after 2 days the headaches were gone. This was my firt cleanse and I stayed on it for 14 days. I came off the cleanse because I was scheduled for surgery. However, while on the cleanse I felt so alive, alert and full of energy. I maintained my work outs which consisted of 2 hours of both cardio and weight training 2 times a day, 6 days a week, and I felt stronger than ever. I do not know how it worked but it did. I intend to go back on the cleanse tomorrow. I want to purge my body of the drugs that are necessary before and after most surgeries.

The only side effect that I have found was that I was continuously cold…but I just threw on a couple of layers and problem solved. I also did not like the taste of cayenne pepper so I by pasted it by taking it in capsule form with my drink and was able to up the dosage. That way I was able to increase the effects of the pepper and enjoy the taste of my lemonade. I also lost the 10 lbs. that I had gain from the medications that were given to me in attempts to rid me of the headaches. So I am back to my ideal weight of 155 lbs. and have less than 10 % body fat.

I have told many people about the cleanse but have warned them that it is not an answer for weight loss. You will loose weight but the weight you loose will find you when you come off unless you are willing to eat smart and exercise.

I love this cleanse.

I have been preparing myself for the cleanse for the past 3 weeks and plan to start this coming Monday. I am pretty nervous but the newsletter and all of the comments and diaries I haveread are so inspiring. I certainly dont want to lose any weight, but I am a smoker, a fast food and junk food junkie and I dont exercise. I think this could be the first step to the rest of a healthy happy toxin free life! Any comments or advise is always helpful and wanted!!

Joy Fraser March 29, 2008 at 11:43 am

I just wanted to ask a quick question! I am on the mc for the first time and am now on my third day! My initial reason for going on the cleanse was to lose a few pounds and in doing so introduce a healthier way of eating. Yesterday I had some fruit, then later on before going to bed I drank the laxative tea as normal and this mornung I had an elimination which is also normal. I just want to kinow if anyone else has been eating a bit of fruit as well, I dont want to make myself ill so I dnt see any harm in eating fresh fruit. Will this cause any major distruptions to the cleanse and will it stop me from losing weight?

gaby March 31, 2008 at 11:22 am

I am not massivly over weight I am 5′1 and 138lbs, prior to this I was taking phentamine pills but stopped cause I didnt like the way I felt on them, so its not like I was taking alot of calories before I started. I dont understand why am I so hungry??? Can any one relate to this???

lauralei April 13, 2008 at 4:10 am

I am currently on the master cleanse and this is my 7th day. For some reason i have taken the tea; salt and fibre and have not had any proper bowel movement. to make it worse it feels like my kidneys are failing. My right kidneys are in a lot of pain. I have done the cleanse before and this is the worse experience that i have had. I am a bit skeptical about it now.

shari April 17, 2008 at 5:59 am

hello, i’ve started the detox cleanse 5 days ago and everything started well. now day 5 and 6 i have very little bowel movements. i’m measuring the lemonade and taking the teas. i even did the warm salt water and nothing happen. should i stop the detox or is there anything else i can do?

jane April 18, 2008 at 7:16 pm

I was really looking forward to doing the master cleanse–by the end of my first day it felt like my head was going to explode–i realize one of side effects was headache–but i could not stand it—does anynone have any suggestions for this side effect?

jane April 19, 2008 at 9:55 am

i found a lot of good hints for this cleanse and others on curezone.com

Monica Taylor April 23, 2008 at 5:56 pm

I am on day five of the Master Cleanse & I have not cheated at all. Yet I have only been having one bowel movement per day, & even the one isn’t a big one. I have a history of only having 1 to 2 bowel movements per week when I’m not on any kind of laxative, so I was really looking for this to relieve some of the back up. I’m looking for advice on what I can try to make this more effective.

diana April 25, 2008 at 8:06 am

I don’t think Raylen has time to answer these questions and honestly many of the questions here have the answers on this actual site and most are found in this book “the Master Cleanse Secrets guide ” so please buy the book or if you have the book, read it.

Has anyone had any side effects with the loss of electrolyles on this cleanse? I am on my 5th day and was doing quite well until mid-morning. I started feeling light headed, began feeling weak/dizzy, palpitations and chest pressure. I am a very healthy person. It lasted about an hour I had simiilar symptons when I took Hydroxycut years ago and it scared me as it did this morning. I took some Zija juice (hiigh in patassium) and felt better after deciding hte symptoms were not going away. I began to feel better almost immediately. I am a nurse practitioner and definitely know the signs and symptoms of low potassium. I’ve had lots of diarrhea and cut back on the laxative tea. Will drinking Zija juice (fruit) every morning hurt the goals of the cleanse?

Rosie July 29, 2008 at 3:20 am

I finished my cleanse and I see the results. And so are other people I work with. I didn’t want to weigh myself just wanted to see it in my clothes after I was finished. Especially the way my swimsuit fits.
The side affects have been there, but not like I thought they would be. However, I have definitely have tried to take it easy and get plenty of rest.
My face looks extremely hydrated due to all the water I have been drinking. So, I’m happy about that.
I’m slowly and surely starting to eat some regular foods, but sticking with raw veggies and some fruits. I forgot about just starting out with juices. So, my stomach was a little queezy for about an hour. I’m still incorporating the water mixes everyday as I want to lose a little more.
A couple of people from work asked about the cleanse and I gave it to them and the link to the website. I also wrote down a few tips for them like the ones on your e-mails to start with a 3 day cleanse and move your way up to 10 days. I think it gives most people a sense of accomplishment when it their goals seems closer to achieve.

Thank you for this cleanse!

I had gained 35 lbs in the last year from trying several anti depressants.I was dissapppointed with my body and never liked drugs …so weined myself off the pillls and attempted this cleanse.
I am now at Day 7 and feeling awesome.I have so much energy and such a positive clear mind…..and no period this month WHOHOO…lol.
The first day was tough..headaches (withdrawls I presume from coffee..) but I have lost 15 lbs so far…..
I hung my jeans that I could no longer fit..about 3 inches to get zipper done up…and within 4 days I could get them done up :0) Still tight but a great feeling.
I would recommend this to anyone because it will change your whole attitude…..I am now thinking of staying off meat…except maybe fish and poultry.
PS I did the Senna every nite instead of salt water flush as I did not want to quit and i know I would have…I am not that strong! Also drank green tea in am and afternoon for hep with weightloss.
goodluck all…..

Cristin December 2, 2008 at 10:44 pm

You suggest drinking your weight in ounces of water. Are you including the lemonade in that? The salt-water drink? And/or the tea? I just don’t want to drink too much water.

Hope December 4, 2008 at 8:41 am

Hi everyone,
My name is Hope. I am a 27 year old female in Atlanta, Ga. I have been on the Cleanse for only two days and I must say that it has been rough. But I have a serious question. Yesterday the temptation for food got to great and i cheated, I feel awful about it, and just need to know what to do next. I talked to a friend who works at Whole foods market, and he says its normal. But that i could just start over. This is the first time i have ever done anything like this, and i never realized how much i depended on food to get me through. I really want to see this through and just wanted some advice. Thank you
Hope

kish December 8, 2008 at 11:29 am

I am twenty-eight girl and dont quit today is my tenth day and results are amazing. I hope u are holding on strong. I started at 213 and today I am 204 wow I can feel it and see it I feel so amazing.

Chelsea December 9, 2008 at 8:30 pm

This is the second time I have done the cleanse. The first time I stopped after 6 days because my teeth were so sensative. I could have cleansed longer if my teeth were not bothering me so much. This time I am trying a straw. Did anyone else experience this?

sandy December 10, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Im on day three of the master cleanse, and today was the best by far . Day 1 like many was tough. Day two I felt tired and had a few headaches . But today I feel energized ,And less bloated .I am experiencing one problem Ive only had 1 BM. And that was the night before I started this program. Is this common? Or is it because Im not eating solids to eliminate. Well things are looking good so far and after the 10 th day I will leave a comment on how much weight Ive lost. Good luck everyone.

Emma December 28, 2008 at 4:48 am

I did the cleanse and did not cheat once. This is my first time. I had good results. I did have some headaches occassionally and just dealt with it. It eventally went away. I feel so much better. My skin looks and feels better. I have more energy. I lost 15 pounds. I will do this cleanse again because I see the difference in my digestive system and other internal benefits. My body ha never been cleansed internally. It loved it. So at least 3 times a year.

Suzanna December 29, 2008 at 11:51 pm

I started the MC today and I am very excited to see results physically and mentally (not craving sweets), but my concern is after you stop the MC is it true that you gain half the weight you lost immediately, how can you keep it off?

Sim December 30, 2008 at 6:09 pm

I wonder if a few ounces of food affect the master cleanse. Because I have a family with young children, I have to cook. As a result, I have taken a few taste bites and wonder if that will affect. Must I really drink 150 ounces of water …
1 1/2gallons worth in addition to all the other liquids?

LJM January 5, 2009 at 3:27 pm

The reason many people have headaches is due to caffiene withdrawal in the frirst few days of the cleanse. It is recommended that those starting out on the cleanse should take vitamin b-5 for SEVERAL days leading up to the cleanse and cut the caffiene out (halfing normal caffiene leading up to the day of the fast). Then start the fast with NO caffieine and NO vitamin supplements.

I’m on day eight… two more to go and I’ve lost over 7 pounds and two BMI points.

Amanda January 6, 2009 at 10:48 am

I am on day 4 of the cleanse and haven’t been hungry at all. It is going well except last night I noticed a rash on my face. It is still there this morning…I realize that this is a side effect, but should I stop the cleanse? I really want this to go away and fear that it will only get worse. Will it go away if I stop? It looks like I have cottage cheese under my skin – super bumpy. What do you think? I will only do this cleanse if it is going to be safe…

Nagela Bonnet January 14, 2009 at 8:52 pm

I started the MC for two and a half days to see how it works. it was fabulous, i did not have the headache because since last August i quit caffeine for good. i never felt hungry and i passed each morning some gross toxin. my friend and I are going to do it for a week starts January 22nd, 09. i almost forgot i lost 4.8lbs during that time. I will keep you posted of my result.

Finishing up Day 8 of the cleanse and going for 10.
First 3 days were tough, lot’s of cravings and in a really bad mood on day 3. My lower back started hurting on day 4 and went away day 6. It seemed like the pain was in my kidneys. I put a heating pad on it and jumped in the jacuzzi and took long baths. I have been running about 4 miles every day and I think that helps in getting the toxins out faster. I have lot’s of energy and feel great now. I have lost 13 pounds in 8 days, went from 190 to 177. My tongue is half white but slowly disappearing. I’m so stoked I bought tickets to Costa Rica today for 2 weeks!

HI,

I STARTED THE CLEANSE 1/17/09 THE ONLY THING I HAVE FELT SO FAR HEADACHE AND MY LEGS HURT I HAVE READ SOME OF THE LETTERS FROM OTHER PEOPLE AND I’M STOKED I PRAY I CAN MAKE IT TO THE END!

michele January 21, 2009 at 11:42 pm

I started the cleanse on January 5th – I’m on my 17th day. I know Raylen says that anything past 10 days is dangerous but I have done the cleanse two other times. I am in good health and I feel great! The only side-effects I have experienced were abdominal cramps the first couple of days along with fatigue. Slight headaches on day 4 & 5. Didn’t really start feeling hunger until the 10th day (I have 40 lbs. to lose!) I was addicted to sleeping pills for years but I have not taken one since I started and have never slept better in my life! I plan to stop at 20 days. I have lost 15 lbs!

myna January 29, 2009 at 5:26 pm

can i use grade A organic maple syrup?

Irene January 31, 2009 at 10:07 am

Hi Myrna,

According to the Master Cleanse guide I purchased and downloaded, “the grade A maple syrup is not the best choice because it goes through a different refinement process, and it does not contain as many minerals as grade B maple syrup”.
I am on my sixth day of cleansing and I used grade A on my frist 3 days. I had a hard finding grade B, until I visited Traders Joe store. They have organic Grade B maple syrup and even cheaper than grocery price of grade A.
Hope this answer you question and good luck on your cleansing.

Cheers,
Irene from CA

Roberta February 11, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Hi To All,
I’ve been on the cleanse for 10 days now and am feeling really good. I’ve been on alot of diets before but this is not like any diet i have tried. I basically went on the cleanse to detox. The benifits of weight loss are (lost 11 lbs). My one question is what should I eat after the cleanse? I have heard that the food combining lifestyle is the best way to go so I won’t get toxic again.
