Managing The Master Cleanse Side Effects

by Raylen on December 12, 2006

Hello, I hope you’re all doing well.

There’s been lots of good feed back on this blog. It’s nice to read about your experiences with the master cleanse, and your comments have prompted the writing of todays newsletter.

It’s about the side effects of the master cleanse.

When you do the master cleanse you’re almost certainly going experience some side effects. Your body will be going through a major detox, and it’s going to affect you.

Fatigue, aches, and headaches are the most common, but each persons experience is unique.

There are some things you can do to lesson the negative effects of the master cleanse, but before I get that I think it’s important to restate the advice I give in my master cleanse guide….

—————————————————————————————
Always pay attention to your body, and don’t be afraid to stop in the middle of the Master Cleanse if you start to feel any adverse effects. Remember, the goal is good health, and you should not jeopardize your current health in the obtainment of that goal.
—————————————————————————————

I know how hard it can be to stop in the middle of the cleanse when you’ve got yourself pumped up to finish it through, but if you’re not comfortable with how you feel sometimes it’s the best thing to do.

But to help lesson those uncomfortable feeling you can follow these 3 tips…

1. Take it easy while on the cleanse. You want to avoid physically demanding activities and stressful activates. The master cleanse does take a toll on your body, and you won’t have the strength and energy you normally do so you’ll want to take it easy.

2. Drink lots of filtered water. You can drink your fill of water, but it’s important you drink filtered water. Tap water and bottled water contain chemicals, and the master cleanse is all about detoxing your body not putting toxic material back into your body.

To save on filtered water you can use a home filtration system like the aquasana that which gives you filtered water for just 9 cents a gallon. Here’s a link to the aquasana web site www.aquasana.com

3. Make sure your adding enough maple syrup and lemon. The master cleanse ingredients provide your body with nutrition and it’s important that you don’t leave anything out or skimp on certain items.

Following these steps should help lesson the side effects of the master cleanse, but please remember not to push your body to hard.

I hope this helps makes your master cleanse experience a little more pleasurable

For the last ten (10) days I have been on the Master Cleanse Programme. The side affects that I experience were as you said, fatigue and headaches. For me after the fourth or fifth day I was feeling pretty ok. This cleansing programme has been wonderful for me I have lost weight and because of that my back pains is less severe and my skin is so clean I wish I had done this before. I know that I will continue useing this programme. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the insight on the side effects. The information has helped so much. The first day I had such a terrible headache. It was that time of month also, so maybe along with starting the cleansing that had something to do with it. I tried to do my normal jog and didn’t have the energy. My husband and I doing this together which makes it a lot nicer. We will take it easy while we’re on the Cleanse. We have 8 more days to go. Thanks Again Carol Cowan

Hi, I have a question on the water. We are planning to buy the filter you mention but we have found an ARTESIAN WELL in Ogden Utah and just love the taste. Is that water good enought to use for the cleanse?

Erica December 13, 2006 at 12:03 pm

Unfortunately, the longest I could stay on the Master Cleanse was 6 days. I just wasn’t going to the bathroom as often as I liked. I recently went to the doctor and was diagnosed with IBS or slow bowels. Even with taken the laxative teas I just wasn’t feeling as empty as possible. Perhaps I will try again. I love the Master Cleanse and still recommend it to all I come in contact with.

Hello to you and thank you for the update on the master cleanse. I would like to say one thing that my sister and I both experienced on the master cleanse,We were both affected with our teeth. She had a hard time to indure the pain, and I had loose teeth that were very sore, painful to be more precise. But I am willing to put all that aside and do it agian in the month of Feb.it will be 4 months for me,I did get off of coffee but started up again on the toxins. My next goal is to stay off of coffee and maybe my sore back will not come back this time thank you for the letters Diane Bertin

I’m on my 8th day of the master cleanse. I’m alittle troubled that I’m not eliminating three times a day as the book states. I’ve tried the laxative teas and even the salt mixture which helped a bit. Any suggestions?

Cynthia December 14, 2006 at 8:52 am

I just completed the 10 days of the master cleanse and experienced all of the normal discomfort the first 3 days and then I was able to move around normally. But the last 2 days my back started to hurt. I’m sure it was gas and drank club soda which made it move to my stomach. My stomach pains subsided after some pomp and circumstance!!! Is there some way to avoid this painful effect?

Maria December 14, 2006 at 10:42 am

I love your newsletter and tips.

I’ve been off the cleanse for over a month and find myself craving the lemonade concoction. I lost a total of 12 pounds and want to lose more but I don’t want to do the cleanse for 40 days. I would like your opinion on using the lemonade for breakfast and lunch and eating a sensible dinner. Do you think it’s safe?

Shirely van Leeuwen December 14, 2006 at 3:55 pm

I plan on doing the cleanse(10 days) in January after the holiday are over. This will be my 3rd time in 5 months. I love it and recommend it to everyone who asks me how I lost my weight. Even toxic people I tell to get on the plan. I have never suffered any bad effects other than being cold.Has anyone gone 10 days or longer that can tell me what it’s like? I have lost 32 pounds and have kept it off for three months. Please keep up the good work on your letters.

Renae Nelson December 14, 2006 at 10:52 pm

Hi thanks, for the update. Tell me, can you or should you excercise while on the Master Cleanse?

Debra Andersohn December 27, 2006 at 11:42 am

about water. I cannot afford right now to get the filter. So do I have to use bottled water :(
What is the best until I can ge teh filter?
Will I still benifit?

Michelle December 29, 2006 at 12:56 pm

I really enjoyed the magic story. I recently subscribed to your newsletter. I find it extremely helpful. I cant do the master cleanse just yet because I am breastfeeding. I am preparing myself for it though, cant wait to start.

Casey December 29, 2006 at 6:37 pm

I finished a 10-day cleanse a little more than a month ago, and was extremely pleased with the results. I plan to do another in March.
Sorry to be graphic, but I am about 2 months late with my menstral cycle and was wondering if this has anything to do with the cleanse. I have an irregular cycle anyway due to a low BMI, but never THIS late. Also, I have negative pregnancy results. I can’t find anyone who has experienced this, and I was wondering if any of the women here have had this problem.

Julie January 1, 2007 at 11:05 am

I’ve been reading your newsletters and would really like to give the clense a try. My concern is that I’m a Type 1 diabetic. How do I handle my insulin requirements and sugar in the syrup while on the clense? Is there an adapted recipe I can use? What are your suggestions?
Thanks!

Eren Moore January 2, 2007 at 10:44 am

Hi Raylen,
Happy New Year to you & thank u for all your helpful healthy tips. I am starting the Master Cleanse tomorrow and I must tell you how much your pre-warm up activities are right on target. I set my date for the cleanse about 4 weeks ago & have been trying to get myself in order mentally & physically. I even made it a point to take off 4 days from work to complete the cleanse since i am a first-timer. I am planning to complete a 5 day cleanse.
I was wondering if you could re-send the “video stream” you sent maybe a couple weeks ago which had someone explaining exactly how to mix all the ingredients together.
Thanks again & blessings to you in the New Year,

Eren Moore

theo January 2, 2007 at 10:51 am

How often should I drink the lemonade. How many fluid ounces minimum per day?
I do want to start immediately.
Thanks

theo January 2, 2007 at 10:57 am

Nevermind, I re-read and found the minimun is 60oz per day. I will let you know how it all works out.
Thank again!

Tony January 3, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Hello Raylen

Before going on the cleanse I researched the topic for months, which is how I stumbled onto your newsletter, which by the way is great and a very valuable resource.
I followed the cleanse exactly as per the book even using natural fluoride free toothpaste and natural aluminum free deodorant on days when I had to leave the house, as well as putting a filter on my shower to get rid of the chlorine and other toxins in the water.
I know you frown upon staying on the cleanse for longer than 10 days, but on the 10th day my tongue was still severely coated and still could not believe the stuff coming out of me in the morning after the salt water flush. Being what I suspect to be a highly toxic person, due to many years of steroid abuse as well as having the worst diet of anyone I’ve ever heard of, I decided to stay on longer. To make a long story short I cleansed for 21 days. During that time I discontinued all medications, against doctor’s orders of course. (2 for high blood pressure and 1 for extreme acid reflux) On day 21 my tonuge was still pretty coated but I ran out of maple syrup so decided to start the coming off the cleanse process. In those 21 days, which were only difficult in the beginning, I lost 52 lbs. and to me and my doctor’s absolute amazement my blood pressure was 120/70. Before the cleanse it was 160/100 and that’s with meds, without meds its been as high as 180/110. And I had not experienced any acid reflux on the cleanse, or after the cleanse. This cleanse in my eyes is truly amazing and would highly recommend it. But only if you are disciplined enough to follow all directions and not cheat what so ever.
Oh by the way on day 21 I was still coughing up thick mucus which is a sign of toxins.
Do you think it would have been safe to go a little longer?
Also does this cleanse kill the good natural bacteria needed by the body? If so how do you replace it?

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Tony

Sharanda January 9, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Hi,

In my part of town, Norhthern NJ, I could not find the grade B of maple syrup. There is only grade A. That is what I used and I did the cleanse for a precautionary 3 day period. I did not notice a change of the way I felt at all. Is that normal? I’m not worried, just thought I’d feel different somehow. Could this be because I only cleansed for 3 days?

Candice January 9, 2007 at 10:21 pm

I’m looking forward to begin my first attempt of the Master Cleanse. But before I begin, I have a question. I plan to do a cleanse 2-3 days a month, every month while I on my period (because my appetite is decreased during that time). Is that a good idea ? I’m using the cleanse as both a detoxifier and a weight loss method.

Roslyn January 12, 2007 at 10:43 am

Hello, I was still wonering about the diearra that I’m experincing is that normal, or should I get off the cleanse it’s been 6 days.

Jae January 16, 2007 at 12:21 am

Hi.
I am on the 6th day of the cleanse. I feel wonderful, I have a ton of energy and I do not want to come off. This is my second time doing the cleanse, the last time I only made it 6 days and gave in. I desire to go 21 days this time. The person (Tony) who went 21 days really inspired me. I have wt. issues, and although this is not a diet, I am losing wt.He mentioned that you do not suggest staying on longer than 21 days WHY?, I have fasted several times for spiritual reasons and I always feel so much better, this time I do not want to go back to those same habits as before namely meat! I would love to lose 50lbs.

Kassie January 26, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Hi! Thank you for newsletter! I have a question. I am on my fifth day and hve not had any major elimination. I up my water and lemonade mixture intake, I am doing the SWF and tea. All i get is loose stools. I was thinking of also taking an overcounter cleanser with this. Any suggestions? Help! I am getting frustrated! Thanks again!!

Jina January 29, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Hi when you said make sure u put enough maple syrup and lemon i was wondering. is 2 tbsp of lemon juice and 2 tbsp of maple syrup in 48 ounces enough? the directions never told me how much water to add and since it said drink at least 48 ounces a day i thought thats what they meant…..confused

Michelle February 9, 2007 at 8:52 am

I just did 5 days of the master cleanse and the only day that I had the headaches was the first day. On day two I was a little tired but by day 3 I was feeling real good. I lost lbs of waste. I will continue to do 3 day mini cleases until I reach my desired weight goal.

Stephanie February 13, 2007 at 10:36 am

I’ve been on the diet for 2 days now and have already lost 5 pounds. So that’s amazing in itself. I feel great too, it’s just the craving for solid food. But the drink does satisfy. I did have a question though. Is it ok to chew sugar free gum while on this diet? I’m not going to do it unless i kno i can because i don’t want to mess anything up. Anyway,I’ll be able to fit into that little outfit in two weeks! Thanks Master Cleanser!

RAVEN February 13, 2007 at 11:28 am

Hi. I did a very dumb thing while on my 2nd day of the MC. I had the worst migraine that I have ever had in all my life, I couldn’t even lift my head or move my eyes from side to side without feeling like my head would explode. I unconciously? took a couple of aspirin (I know, dumb huh?-but I wasn’t thinking clearly) and I got sooooo very sick in my stomach, and the bummer is—-IT DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR MY INSANE, GIGANTIC MIGRAINE! I got so sick that I had to stop the diet and just sip water for the rest of the day. The next day I did a little broth and some veggies and felt much better, and quickly gained back the 2lbs. that I had lost so far.
But, I refuse to let this taint my desire to finish a 10-day MC. So, I am starting again right after Valentine’s Day. (Gotta get that Valentines Day dinner!!!!:)

tAMARA SANDERS February 13, 2007 at 9:08 pm

i have a question? i have done this cleanse 2times now and the first time felt a little easier. i went 10 days the first time and the cravings subsided after 3-4 days. This time the craving never left they seem to increase witheach day and i could aonly make it through 8.5 days. when i stopped the cleanse i could not wait to eat junk again, why do you think the efect was this way? i need some serious advise. It’s been 2weeks since my last cleanse and i feel so loaded up with toxins already again because i delved right back in face first. i want to try again in another week or so, any suggestions?

Cris March 7, 2007 at 9:30 am

When i first started the cleanse i had headaches for the first to days then i was ok, but the last to days i was really sick my body didnt want the salt water anymore i had to force myself to drink it. And the lemon drink was even worse, it’s like my body didnt want it anymore, i really had to fight out those last to days. Is this normal or was my body trying to tell me something and i wasnt listening. The result were great i think i lost about 8lb in ten days.

Tom March 7, 2007 at 11:24 am

Hi Raylen,
I’ve been pondering and procrastinating with the Cleanse for about a month now and finally the time has come. I started today…had my first herbal (laxative) tea last night and drank a quart of sea salt water mix this morning. I have consumed about half of my pre-made 64 oz jug of the lemonade mix. I can’t believe how lemon juice water and cayenne can screw up the great taste of maple syrup (I’ll get used to it) I’m a pretty stubborn person so I will be able to accomplish the scheduled ten day cleanse. Other subscribers may find the following helpful or maybe inspirational. I am a 56 year old male 6′2″ tall and weigh (as of this morning) 230 lbs. I take the following medications: blood pressure, cholesterol, urinary tract relaxer (enlarged prostate), wellbutrin, clonazepam and (lorazepam when needed) for panic disorder, glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health and pain, over the counter back pain drug (Robax Platinum) and Grapefruit apple cider vinegar supplement with Hoodia, attempting weight control. I am a smoker ( 1 pack of 25 cigarettes every three days.
I consulted with my doctor 2 weeks ago about quitting everything while on the Cleanse. He was fine with it and told me his only concern was my blood pressure which I will have taken twice a day for the duration.
I have made an apointment with my doctor for day 11 of the cleanse and I will at that time have a full medical and with any luck be able to throw away some if not all of my medications. Quitting the smoking is a no brainer. The only problem I can foresee is that I love to cook and eat and I don’t want to go back to doing that the way I have been after the cleanse is done. Wish me luck.
I’ll keep you posted throughout the 10 days.
Thanks for your motivation and support.
Tom

Pauleen March 14, 2007 at 6:08 am

I’ve not started the master cleanse yet. I’ve seen bottles of maple syrup but your emphasis on using the Organic, Grade B maple syrup is posing difficulties. I would not make the difference between sweetened maple syrup and the organic. Would any other maple syrup do the cleanse effectively? I’m itching to start but can’t until I’ve heard from you. Congratulations on the good job you are doing – spreading knowledge for the benefit of others.

Lisa March 14, 2007 at 8:43 am

Hi Raylen,
I did the cleanse on 12/26 for 12 days, I have never felt better and really enjoyed the bonus of the weight loss. I have lost 35 pound and am at goal weight now. I plan on doing another cleanse in a couple months. I am enjoying reading your information and blogs.. I am a firm believer!!!! Thanks from a cleanse success story…..

bev March 29, 2007 at 7:05 am

Hi – I am on day 4. I originally thought i would stop today, but when I got up, I felt pretty good. I reread some of the book and decided to keep going.
Question – when I do a salt cleanse, it affects me all day. All day I have bowel movements, so I can’t go any further than my bedroom in order to be close to the bathroom. I can’t be tied to the house this close so did the cleanse at night. is this ok?

Shane' Akens March 29, 2007 at 9:01 am

I have completed the 10 day cleanse and am on the last few days of the “exiting process”. I had a few questions about this detox program . Does it detox the liver and candida? I have not had any tarry stools or stools that appear to be old waste. Does this mean that I need to repeat this thoroughout the year until I see these results?

Rebecca April 4, 2007 at 10:56 am

I am considering starting the cleanse, however, I suffer from cronic migraines {up to 7 a month; I will be consulting my neurologist before starting}. Has anyone ever done this cleanse that suffers from migraines? And what have you done to help yourself. One of the reasons I want to do this is because of all the medications I have been put on because of the headaches and the surgery I went through to help with them. I want to get all that “stuff” out of my body ~ then maybe the headaches will stop.

Also, I workout 5 days a week, is it best to stop that all together for the 10 days of the cleanse?

Thanks for any and all feed back!

Melissa May 7, 2007 at 10:33 pm

I enjoy reading all the inquiries on this Blog, however I find it very interesting that it seems many of you have NOT read the book by Stanley Burroughs. Everything you will need to get started whether you are diabetic or otherwise…Plus how to complete and end the cleanse are all in the book.

Also, keep in mind this cleanse was never intended to be a “diet” but a cleanse, to rid toxins and disease, overcome addictions. Weight loss is just a bonus :)

Again, I recommend getting the book for $6. It is complete and answers every single question posed in this forum. I can’t imagine going to the length and sacrifice to do this cleanse half-heartedly. If you are going to do this, do it right without substituting ingredients or cheating here and there, you want the full benefits of the cleanse since you are going to all the trouble! I am a huge advocate of this cleanse and know first hand it works and is amazing! Best of luck to ya–

ConnieJohnson May 24, 2007 at 11:55 am

I did FINISH my 10 day master cleanse and i’m on my 11th day waiting for the 3rd day so i can eat some fruits, veg, and SALADS. But on day 2 is there anything other than rye wafers i don’t eat them what about ritz crackers or bread sticks and so far 15 1/4 lbs. are gone.

thank you

Nick May 29, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Today is 5-29-07 I plan to start the master cleanse tomorrow. I have a question… I work nights (8p-6a) and I have been trying to modify the cleanse to fit my shedule. Any suggestions?

Nick May 29, 2007 at 6:30 pm

I also wanted to know if you could take tylenol or advil for headaches during the cleanse?

Lisa May 31, 2007 at 10:56 am

Hey there, Just wanted to say that your e-mails are very helpful and informative. I’m going to start the cleanse this Sunday evening and am so excited about doing it. Thanks again!

Shanna June 19, 2007 at 7:24 am

I am considering trying the master cleanse diet, but i have one question? Where do i find the Grade B maple syrup?

Audrey June 24, 2007 at 9:38 pm

I’ve been on the master cleanser for four days now I have not been having any side affects. This is my second time on the cleaner. The first time I did it for 7 days. This time I plan to go longer. I heard you can cut back on the maple syrup so instead of doing 12 tblsp I did 10 tblsp. Is this okay?
Thanks.

Pat July 24, 2007 at 9:37 am

I’m on the Master Cleanses 2nd day. The HoodiThin realy helps the hunger cravings. The only problem I’m having is the lemon repeating on me. Any Suggestions. The first day I mixed the drink the night before and it was just to hot. Today I mixed it right before starting to drink it and it is much better. I’m hoping that the acid from the lemons don’t bother me today.

Charlynn July 24, 2007 at 11:12 am

I have done the master clense for 12 days and i feel great. The first two days were terrible, I was extremely hungry and I had terrible headaches. By day three I felt wonderful. I did the cleanse to break my cravings for sweets and it has worked.

mindy July 30, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I am currently in the middle of my fourth day. I have been having difficulties drinking the lemonade. Just the thought of it makes my stomach quesy. The cheyene pepper is also to spicy for me. What can I do to make it better?

Stephanie August 25, 2007 at 1:17 pm

Hi

I did the MC for only one day because the pepper was just way too much for me…it was the taste…it was horrible. I ordered some “gel capsules” from a health food store and I am going to put my cayenne pepper in those and swallow them with my drink of lemon, water and grade B maple syrup. I could handle everything but the taste of the drink and I’m anxiously waiting for these capsules to arrive so I can start back on this diet. I was just wondering if anyone else took their cayenne pepper in a capsule instead of mixing it with the drink. I figured it would have the same effect because it is just a simple capsule that will dissolve in my stomach in a few min. after I finish my drink. Any other suggestions?

Lynn September 28, 2007 at 9:23 am

Hi there,
I am on my 12th day of the cleanse and I am unsure when to stop. I feel great (and have most of the cleanse). The problem is, I am still getting alot of solid matter out of my body. Will this “stuff” continue to come out if I stop now or should I keep going until most of this is gone?
Thanks for the site!
Lynn

Karen September 28, 2007 at 2:51 pm

Well, i’m on day one and obviously have a long way to go. I haven’t been hungry at all and i wish i could pass on the salt water flush. But i know how important it is, so i will stick w/ it even though it makes me gag. The most difficult thing is my lack of energy. Does this get better as the days progress?
