Managing The Master Cleanse Side Effects

by Raylen on December 12, 2006

Hello, I hope you’re all doing well.

There’s been lots of good feed back on this blog. It’s nice to read about your experiences with the master cleanse, and your comments have prompted the writing of todays newsletter.

It’s about the side effects of the master cleanse.

When you do the master cleanse you’re almost certainly going experience some side effects. Your body will be going through a major detox, and it’s going to affect you.

Fatigue, aches, and headaches are the most common, but each persons experience is unique.

There are some things you can do to lesson the negative effects of the master cleanse, but before I get that I think it’s important to restate the advice I give in my master cleanse guide….

—————————————————————————————
Always pay attention to your body, and don’t be afraid to stop in the middle of the Master Cleanse if you start to feel any adverse effects. Remember, the goal is good health, and you should not jeopardize your current health in the obtainment of that goal.
—————————————————————————————

I know how hard it can be to stop in the middle of the cleanse when you’ve got yourself pumped up to finish it through, but if you’re not comfortable with how you feel sometimes it’s the best thing to do.

But to help lesson those uncomfortable feeling you can follow these 3 tips…

1. Take it easy while on the cleanse. You want to avoid physically demanding activities and stressful activates. The master cleanse does take a toll on your body, and you won’t have the strength and energy you normally do so you’ll want to take it easy.

2. Drink lots of filtered water. You can drink your fill of water, but it’s important you drink filtered water. Tap water and bottled water contain chemicals, and the master cleanse is all about detoxing your body not putting toxic material back into your body.

To save on filtered water you can use a home filtration system like the aquasana that which gives you filtered water for just 9 cents a gallon. Here’s a link to the aquasana web site www.aquasana.com

3. Make sure your adding enough maple syrup and lemon. The master cleanse ingredients provide your body with nutrition and it’s important that you don’t leave anything out or skimp on certain items.

Following these steps should help lesson the side effects of the master cleanse, but please remember not to push your body to hard.

I hope this helps makes your master cleanse experience a little more pleasurable

WOW, Chani – I don’t know about all that, but you have just scared the crap out of me seeing as that I am on day 2 and fighting a headeache and general fatigue. I won’t be able to get through it if that is what is coming.. I would go see a doctor if I were you.

Hello – I am considering starting this in a couple of days – anyone tried this lately?

Maleana August 13, 2010 at 1:34 pm

I’m on Day 3-when I weighed first thing this morning, I had lost 4 lbs. after 2 days on MC. I was very pleased with this since I’m 5’4″ and weighed 126 to begin with. I have a very petite frame and my comfortable weight is 108-115. When I put on more I start to feel pain in my joints and other issues. I hope to lose 10 lbs. Day 1- I drank only 4-10 oz servings of the lemonade and the rest in water. The water has been no issue for me because I drink about 2 liters a day anyway. However, I did not do the salt water on Day 1. Day 2-I followed exactly-drank 6-10 oz. servings, lots of water throughout the day, and the 35 oz. of salt water ONLY before bed. For me, I would not attempt this at any other time during the day. I was running to the bathroom many times from 8-midnight. I did have very back headaches Day 1, 2 and a little today…but is getting better. I am pretty stubborn and have some will power, so I intend to stick with it. Will keep you posted.

I am on Day 7 of the MC and I feel great. I have done this fast many times before and it works well. I would not recommend it for dieting, or even for detoxing, for more than 10-14 days, especially if you are not significantly overweight. I think one of the most important things you can do is drink plenty of water in addition to this; however, if you feel chilled, you may be drinking too much. Drinking the water will take care of the headaches. I’ve not had a single headache this time around. I’ve not felt fatigued or dizzy either. I found that the amount of cayenne recommended was too much for me, so I cut it down to 1/8 t. for a two-day portion and it seems to work fine and be easier to drink. I recommend you not exercise too vigorously on this fast unless you work out at least 5 days a week in a gym. Even then, you might want to cut down, just to allow your body to use it’s energy to cleanse and to get what might be some much-needed rest.

I’ve been on the Master Cleanse since 8/30/2010 and have noticed loss of inches…I am still on it. My clothes fit better, my elimination is also much better. I am not at all tired. I have no headaches. I lost more in inches than pounds. I now have managed to drink the sea salt flush in the morning and 1 letter of the lemonade drink mixture before heading to work in the morning, 10 AM and another 1 litter of the lemonade drink mix by bed time, 10 PM. I also drink the herbal tea through out the day, 3-4 cups a day. I am so glad I started the cleansing.

Jennifer C. October 13, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I am on day 3 I tried the salt flush for the first time today. Ive been drinking more of the lax teas. Well when I tried the salt I immediatly threw up and it gave me a stomach ache could not stop going to the bathroom. I was not able to go to work. I think I will leave the salt flush for the weekends and just continue using the lax teas day and night.

Tara October 20, 2010 at 8:12 am

I’m on day 3 of MC. I have been having a bad pain in my lower back for the last 2 days now. It’s almost none stop. I have always experienced back pains bit not like this. Has anyone had this? Any ideas on what it could be? Not sure if I should stop or not.

Meaghan November 17, 2010 at 12:19 am

hi I am on Day 7 and its going really well .. this is not my first fast but IS my first master cleanse. I have fasted before on water, juice, vegie soup .. (not really fasting but you know what i mean) .. I find this WAY better, few hunger pains that quickly go when i drink the lemon. I had rotten headaches first day but lots of water took care of that. I feel SO active .. Ive been to gym couldnt help it. There was much criticsm on line from doctors etc saying this is a dangerous thing to do .. but it seems to help the people who actually DO it so much …. I probably wouldnt stick with it without the motivation of forums like this .. thanx .. its going to be part of my life from now on. One lemon day a week at least.

I am on day 7 and i’ve lost 8 lbs, i am going to continue it until friday. We are having a christmas party both friday and sunday. I will start back on Monday and go until christmas. I am so excited about my look. I have a 5 year old and 5 month old and I tell you that you wouldnt know it. This diet isnt hard at all, its more Faith over Circumstances. keep it going and dont give up!!!

Justin December 19, 2010 at 2:38 pm

I am on day 2 of the MC and so far so good. I do have the white coating on my tongue which is a good sign of the toxins leaving my body. While I am not energized at the moment, I am not necessarily tired either. I had surgery on my leg on 2 Dec and after sitting around for 2 weeks I put on a bit of weight and wanted not only to drop some of it, but to detox myself as well. I was having horrible cravings yesterday and today they aren’t as bad.

sanemind December 20, 2010 at 2:36 pm

hi Kofi Adu, i work as a medical provider. If you monitor your blood sugar already and are only taking oral medications, I would recommend starting the MC and see how it goes. of course monitor your bloood sugars 8, 12, 5, 9 and in the am.

I have no idea how controlled your DM is. You can always get like ricollah candies and see how that goes. The only way to really know is to try, monitor your blood sugar and see how that goes.

Many people will say you should not do it but the only way to tell is for you try it and see.

happy cleansing !!!!

Shanel December 29, 2010 at 9:23 pm

I am 19 and I am starting the MC in a few days. I’m doing it with a friend for the moral support. She has been struggling to lose weight, I, on the other hand am looking for a way to feel better. The side effects some of the cleaners have shared are not scary to me b/c I.experience extreme fatigue, many minor headaches, and aching joints now. I’m sure it is due to my diet or the lack there of. But if anyone is on fb or would like to contact me through email just to talk about our experiences feel free. I think the first few days are going to be grueling…I need all the support I can get. Good luck in your endeavors to feel better and healthier.

Nelly January 31, 2011 at 5:44 pm

One of my friend was talking about a liver/gallbladder cleanse and it got me interested. I did the liver cleanse and was talking to my other friend who did the MC cleanse 3 times a year. He convinced me that this is the best cleanse out there if you can survive it that is! Right after I finished the liver cleanse I was not feeling hungry and food looked disgusting to me. My friend on the other hand couldn’t wait to eat. I guess we are all different. So I started the master cleanse right away and been on it since then.
3 days on the liver cleanse with Epsom salt, olive oil, and grapefruit.
Today is my day 9 on the MC. To be honest I was doing fine until this weekend. I went to my mom’s house on Saturday and she had made my favorite food. It killed me but couldn’t eat any of it. Since Saturday I had been thinking about food nonstop… I was hoping to keep going until I lose 20lb but it seems like 10 days and 10lb will do this time. I had no headache, but some joints pain. I have been exercising whenever I feel up to it. Honestly I can’t wait to eat normal food. I am craving everything I love. I did this cleanse for health reason but when I found out about the weight loss too it was even more interesting. Not that I am overweight. I weight 120lb or 55kg before the cleanse and am 1.65cm tall.
Best of luck to you all, one more day to go for me….

The only advices I can give you stay away from food or in my instance my mom’s house. If you don’t see food so much u won’t miss it. And start reading a new book so ur mind is occupied.

Starting today feels good to be doing something great for my body

Vanessa February 10, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Hi I am on my 4th Day , I have been drinking the tae at night only n did the flush for the first time today . I wanna know if I hurt myself by by doing this ?
I also plan on doing senna tea throughout the day and night here on out . Is this okay ?

Amanda March 12, 2011 at 4:40 am

Just thinking this might be interesting info for some.
I hadplanned and prepared for this detox quite some time, and the night before i was to start the first day(had allready then followed a special diet for days) i got ill, fever and a little bit painful cough. My son just had it.
i thought what the hell, your body likes to fast when your sick anyways..because that helps to put energy on fighting the infection!so i went ahead.
it is now day three and wll hunger is my least problem but i feel like crap, and have since day one of course. i just dont know if im sick longer because of the fast, or the pain is detoxing or fever..
I strated taking painkillers, and i thought to not put anything in my stomach at least, i use suppos. So i guess thats a tip if you really must.
ive decided to break now. At least i know that if i can do three days while having a fever, not sleeping and having to cook for a two yearold, ill probably succeed next time. So id recommend if you get ill just before starting, wait till your better.

Rochel March 14, 2011 at 5:01 pm

I am 17 years old. I am on day 3 and feeling a little fatigue. The first two days where no trouble but this afternoon i started feeling a ravenous hunger, I am hoping it will go away soon because its making it hard for me to consentrate. I know i have the will power to make it through but if I start to feel extremely worn out and exhausted because I am on the diet will the feeling go away?

Alexis:) April 8, 2011 at 2:02 pm

today is my first day and i feel great, a little tired but that’s to be expected. i need all the support i can get so if anyone wants to chat email me:)

Vel April 9, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I just finished the master cleanse 2 days ago and I feel GREAT! I went from 192.5 lbs to 179 lbs. The last week of the cleanse, I had so much energy I went to the gym every day and jogged a mile on the treadmill. I felt so lighter. I am not sure why but the last day I gained a pound. I was horrified, then I remembered how much weight I had already lost and tried to forget the 1 little pound. I love to eat so I was very impressed with the fact that I did not cheat 1 time. I was usually ok except when cooking dinner for my family. THAT WAS HARD!! I am so pleased with my results and the way that I feel I have referred family and friends to do this. My mom and I did it together and she lost 18 lbs. My husband saw the results we were having so he decided to do it on my day 6, he lasted 5 days and couldn’t do another day. He lost 10 lbs though. Make sure you follow the directions when coming off the MC. It is very important.

Stephanie April 22, 2011 at 4:50 am

I am on day 5 of the MC. I am feeling great but the smell of food really bothers me. My husband and I are doing it together and I have lost 8 pounds in 4 days. I did not weigh myself today. I would love to speak to other people for motivation. I do not have the urge to eat but the smell of food really bothers and irritates me. I am doing the MC so that I can change my eating habits and live a healthier lifestyle. I did notice my skin looks clearer. I pray that I can complete this.

Gioconda April 26, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Hey everyone. I want to start in my cleanse in 2 weeks. I am excited and at the same time I am afraid of the effects. My body is very sensitive. I am tried vegetables juices and as soon as my body starts deriding I get terrible nausea and headache. My question is , is that happens with the mc what should I do to feel better without stoping in the middle? Another question is if mineral water is just as fine cause I do not a spring machine? Kind regards

Ranny May 1, 2011 at 4:08 pm

Hi Everyone,
I’m on day 4 of the MC. Day 3 was the hardest for me, I was feeling lightheaded, but once I drank more H2O and more of the tea, I was great. Today is day 4 and I’m already down 10 lbs. I am so excited and I will definitely finish this to the end. What has helped is keeping a journal. Each day I write down my thoughts, the way I feel, and that has really helped….. If I follow the directions when I come off the cleanse, is it likely that I will keep the weight off? My body feels so much better already, I feel lighter, and I honestly can’t go back to poor unhealthy eating habits. It was amazing to see all the stuff that I’ve been storing in my body…………. How soon can I get back on? My wedding is in July… Good luck to you all!!

Ranny May 1, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Gioconda,
its great that you are preparing yourself mentally for the MC. That really helped.. I tried it before without mentally preparing and I didn’t last for more than 2 days.. This time around, I actually planned a month in advance. It is so much easier. I’m only on day 4 and I will not give up. The results are amazing and you will feel so much better. Good luck!

CathyG June 3, 2011 at 2:47 pm

I’m on Day 2 and feeling pretty good. Lost 3 pounds, but I’m mostly doing this for the cleanse at this point. I’m wondering about coming off the cleanse. How important are those 1 to 3 days after finishing the Lemonade Diet part of the Cleanse? If I start to feel really sick at any time, will I be ok to resume my normal diet (which is pretty healthy)?

lps June 4, 2011 at 9:45 pm

all set to start but just wondering if i can continue taking my protein shakes while on the MC.thanks

Raina June 13, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Day one of the diet. It’s not too bad. I hope I can make the 14 days. The hard part is I am the cook in the house and I am not looking forward to making my family dinner. I might starve them as well! :-)

Porsha June 21, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Hi everyone well today is my first time trying mc. Last night I drank the laxative tea and woke up with really bad cramps. Is this normal ? Then I tried the swf (HORRIBLE) It came right back out anyone know a trick to keep it down ? Then the lemonade the pepper and the syrup bothers me. Can I put less pepper and syrup I really want to make it to the tenth day. So if anyone know please let me know I want to correctly finish the mc. Thanks you to whoever can help.

trina June 25, 2011 at 1:31 pm

This is day 6 for me on the MC- just 4 more to go. I’ve really been struggling the last couple of days. I really want to CHEW something. I’m not craving a whole lot except for my favorite sandwich. I didn’t realize how much food is a part of our daily lives. I mean, I know we all eat, but have you thought about how many food commercials there are on TV. I haven’t had much energy for the last 6 days, so I’ve just been hanging out. I did have a bad headache about 2 days ago but took 1 IB and that helped. I didn’t want to but it was turning into a migraine. Good luck, fellow cleansers!

jasmine June 28, 2011 at 8:47 am

i am starting the cleanse tomorrow with my hubby so i wont have to worry about cooking which is good. i hope the side effects arent to bad. if anyone has any advice let me know. oh and is it ok to drink decafe tea while doing this?

Tamara July 1, 2011 at 11:10 am

I am starting the cleanse today. I have been working out lately and I am hoping that I can continue while on the cleanse. I’m a little irritated that I went to a doctor appointment yesterday and my weight was 155 and today it’s 158…. Its ok. Im sure its just water weight… Wish me well. I wish you all the best and hope you all make it through your ten days!

monica July 21, 2011 at 2:00 am

I fast the first day….wake up in the middle of the night feeling very weak and nauseus. I started the master cleanse lemonade and still feel nauseaus and I’ve been vomitting water…is this normal??

Thank you.

Iris July 31, 2011 at 8:23 am

HI,

I have two questions. I have high blood pressure. I know that sodium elevates blood pressure. Can I take the sea salt flush? If not, What can I do in place of it? Also, I do deep breathing exercises each morning. Can I continue that?

Thank you.

Sheryl August 20, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Hi, I am at the end of day seven on the MC, this is my first time. Had a bit of a headache day 2 but nothing since. I thought the sea salt flush would be hard but it isn’t at all. I hope to continue at least until my tongue is pink. I decided to do the cleanse because I keep gaining weight no matter how little I eat. I know it sounds looney but it is true. I was totally inactive because of broken bones from an accident and I think my metabolism must have slowed to a halt. I also felt tired all the time. I believe in fasting and cleansing and decided the MC might be just what I needed to wake my system up and get it moving again! I hope I feel better when it is all said and done. I am still waiting for energy surge so many folks have said they experience…

Carl September 13, 2011 at 3:03 pm

HI all, great comments for those of us in “mid-cleanse,” Thanks! For me, it’s day 3, and all is positive (this is my 4th cleanse in as many years) except for LOW BACK PAIN- ouch. I sure hope this passes. I don’t remember this from any other cleanse. Headaches- especially day 1- are tolerable, but I had to leave work early since I couldn’t sit in my desk chair.

I have chronic low back issues anyway, but I suppose this could be kidney detox… don’t know, but if it persists throughout the remainder of the week, I may be calling it quits. Still positive, still feeling awesome, and I hope I haven’t brought anyone down. Go for it! You deserve this!

Carl September 14, 2011 at 9:14 pm

Hi again, checking back in at end of day 4 in case this helps anyone cruising by. Energy level is through the roof, I couldn’t nap if I tried. Rise early, focused and working hard all day- feels great.

Low back pain update: still noticeable, but manageable with morning stretches and lots of ice at night. As others have previously mentioned, exercise has been non-existent these past few days. Many thoughts of food come and go during the day. It’s toughest to manage at night. Day 10 and food consumption seems very far away. One day at a time I suppose. I love the benefits of cleansing, but an increased sense of smell has also made ignoring food difficult.

All said, I’m glad to be de-toxing and am hopeful about completing another cleanse. There’s really a great feeling of accomplishment at the end of this. I will focus on that and the distant rewards that come from even more self discipline. Cheers!

BurnStMatt September 15, 2011 at 9:55 am

I’m planning on starting Master Cleasnse this upcoming Monday, here it is Thursday. I have to go out of town so it wouldn’t be advantageous for me to start right now. I’ve been preparing myself by drinking herb teas & bitter tonics. I have high Bp & the doctor told me that I was obese at 199lbs/64inches. I have a muscular build, I lift weights & do cardio BUT according to the doctor I am OBESE. Regardless, I feel full of toxins and want to clean my insides out. So far I believe Master Cleanse is for me, I am still doing some studying especially when it comes to replacing the good stuff that I need in my guts. It’s all coming together for me and I like the discipline of giving up all ‘the bad. I have to go shopping over the next few days, eating light is the key prior to starting on the program. Just have to get through this weekend spending a lot of my time driving.

Lisa September 15, 2011 at 7:40 pm

Hello everyone, I’m almost done with my second day of the mc, I havnt had any headachs or any other pains. Yeah I get Hungary but its livable. I think its more of a habit to want to eat then actually being Hungary. I did have a little anxiety today and I definitly miss having my couple glasses of wine. I drank some chamomille tea to subside the anxiety feeling. I’m ready for day 3, hopefully no anxiety tomorrow.

Nadia November 11, 2011 at 8:01 pm

I’m on day 11. It’s not my first time, I’m going for 17 days. But, for the first time I caught a cold and worried about taking medication. I ended up taking neocitran. Other than the cold feeling good with 6 more days to go. Anyone else get a cold or illness while on the cleanse? What did you do?

Joua November 16, 2011 at 12:23 pm

This is my 3rd day of MC. My headaches are bad. i hope that I can continue. This morning, i was so hungry I was shaking and had an apple to get me through. I hope that didn’t just compromise all my efforts. I have lost 2.5 lbs so far and I’m excited! I’m hoping that tomorrow morning will show better results!

Marco November 20, 2011 at 5:14 pm

Ok, I’m on day 10 and loving it, so far I’ve lost 16 pounds, it would appear mostly from my belly, I did experience hunger the first evening, and a little bad mood the first day, after that, I’m glad to report that it was smooth sailing.

I seriously cannot understand how a person can go with no food for this long, but it is possible, good luck to everybody starting or in the middle of it.

And thank you MC.

Marco

What is a complete list of zero calorie/negative calorie foods?. . what would happen if that was all you ate?. ok well heres what i know negative calorie foods, they take more calories to digest than are in them. zero calories burns the same number of calories as in the item.

Ryan December 16, 2011 at 2:24 pm

I’m on day 3 and am experiencing back pain which started this morning. I’ve had lower back problems in the past and I feel like the lack of protein in my diet may be causing the pain now. I haven’t had headaches so far but my theory on that is it’s because I don’t normally drink coffee or much caffeine anyway. So I don’t have any of that withdrawal. Anyway, the back pain sucks but the hunger is manageable. All of the holiday food around the office has added an extra feeling of accomplishment. I haven’t noticed the white coating on my tongue yet, so I’m kind of waiting for that to happen to see more physical results as weight loss hasn’t been very noticable. My pants are feeling a little looser which is good, but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how the rest of it goes. Good luck all!

ntsiki January 9, 2012 at 12:26 am

I am on my first day of MC and the nice thing is that im looking forward to day ten i think it will help me to just think about day ten then I will go through the other days with ease, but I want to know if you are allowed to have gum while on MC and what type of gum would be more suitable

SexyIsBack2012 January 15, 2012 at 10:16 am

louanne January 31, 2012 at 5:00 pm

I am on the 8th day of the master cleanse and on day 6 I got a really bad sinus headache that is affecting one tooth like and my eye. Both hurt really badly. Is there something I can take for the pain?

Jennifer January 31, 2012 at 9:19 pm

Hi(:
I’m on my second day of the fast. Day one, I experienced extreme fatigue, but I’m assuming that’s common.
However I do have a question. When does one start experiencing the breakouts? Is there any way to control them?
