It’s one of those things that can happen when you do the Master Cleanse that nobody likes talking about. Flatulence, or gas, also called farting. It’s a perfectly normal bodily function, but as one reader mentioned in the comment below it can happen a little more then usual when you go on the Master Cleanse.

I tried the master cleanse for 5 days and my fellow employees surprised me for my birthday. I went off after eating the meal. I had lost 7 lbs. at that point and was highly upset because I was feeling GREAT!

The following week, I tried it again for only 3 days. OK, I had to go off again. I developed a very bad case of gas I think.

My sides were hurting so badly it was almost unbearable. Would someone comment on this? Is this a side effect? However, I made it through the day. I continue to drink a lot of water, I am watching my portions and looking forward to the next time when I can successfully complete the master cleanse. I cannot believe what it does.

Thank you!

To answer the question, having a little more gas then usual is common when you do the cleanse. As for the aching sides that’s no so common. I would suggest lying down as soon as you feel the soreness start to set in, and do some deep breathing to try and relax the core of your body.

  1. I have done the master cleanse before. It’s not something I do regularly but I was doing it yearly for a while until Grade B syrup became hard to find (just found out it was renamed to Grade A —>Robust<—). I have been having some health challenges, as well as weight gain (30 lbs over 3 years and I weight 172 currently last time I checked). I was recently told I had mild non-alcohol fatty liver disease, which is common in obese individuals. I was told to change my diet (which the quality is not the problem but rather the quantity is) so I decided to try the Master Cleanse again after a few years. I have gained wait slowly over a period of time so it would be good to lose it for sure.

This time it’s been REALLY hard and very different. Lots of body aches and it’s day 4. I really have to keep drinking throughout the day or I get dizzy and lightheaded. I am drinking water in between because I know I’m supposed to only take in a certain amount of the lemonade. And the gas. My god. It’s been constant.

All these symptoms are very different from the 9-10 times I’ve done this in the past. I really wanted to reset and clean everything out since I clearly have an issue with my liver but I think if I don’t see a change by day 5 I should ease up and slowly take myself out of the cleanse. Really bummed. I’ve never had trouble with this and this time I just feel like something is different. If anyone had tidbits of wisdom, I thank you.

  2. I have done the cleanse a few times now and I highlt recommend finishing the cleanse properly even if you can only do 3 days or 7 days. If you start eating solid foods with out letting your GI gradually get back to normal, your GI will have a hard time digesting foods properly and cause gas and possible constipation. Well that happened to me the last time I didn’t gradually work my way up to solid foods. I had to take high doses of probiotics to build my GI back up to normal.

    Hope this helps.

Ps I’m on day 6 on the cleanse and lost 8 lbs and can’t wait complete it the right way.

  3. Hmmm, I would advise against any farting whatsoever on the Master Cleanse. You may be in for a watery surprise.

  4. I am seriously considering this program to cleanse myself. I’m going to consider the weight loss a benefit. I never once read whether one can continue to take their prescription meds. Would the cleansing ‘wipe out’ the ‘benefits’ of the prescription meds? Only 2..one for high blood pressure/irregular heart beat. The other for pain..chronic…would be Xtremely difficult to withdraw from this med. Please inform me asap. Thank you. Sincerely, Biting at the bit
