Question From Italy About Grade B Maple Syrup

by Raylen on January 16, 2008

Today Jennifer from Italy posted a comment asking if you can substitute grade A or C maple syrup for the grade B syrup recommended for the Master Cleanse, and if it’s alright to chew gum when you’re doing the cleanse.

Ciao Raylen,

I am writing to you from Florence Italy where I have lived for 13 years. I have started the Master Cleanse and today is my 4th day. I am doing really well, but have an emergency question…I purchased Grade B maple syrup in the states, but apparently too little (I had not read the quantity in the recipe when I purchased). I have only been able to fine Grade C here in our health food stores…..is that ok? The same? Do I have to compensate in any way? The people in the stores have no clue as they do not carry Grade B only A and C….

Also…can I chew gum on the Master Cleanse? I have not because I did not think so, but this white tongue thing…..

Thank you so much for your time!

a presto!
Jennifer

As far as using grade A or C maple syrup it depends on the grading system. In the US we no longer have grade C for retail use, instead grade C is now “commercial grade” syrup.

As long as the maple syrup you’re using is all natural, and not some name brand like Mrs Butterworths you should be fine.

You also asked about chewing gum on the master cleanse, and that’s also fine as long as you don’t swallow the gum. A mistake some people make is to label the Master Cleanse a fast when in fact it’s a detox diet. The master cleanse lemonade has quite a few calories (about 100 per glass), and most of that is sugar from the maple syrup so a few pieces of gum throughout the day won’t hurt.

Krystle – The salt water works! I have a hard time getting anything out of my system and that worked quite well for me! I am on day 3 of my detox and I couldn’t feel more energized, aswell I haven’t had one little migraine. I think I will go to the gym tonight!— Good luck everyone!

I have to take medication for throid every morning with water a half hour before I eat or drink anything else. Is this still safe for me to do? Please help thank you.

Krystle July 15, 2012 at 6:50 am

Do you have to use the laxatives or do the salt water flush in order for it to work?

So I started the MC yesterday, & failed at dinner time. I started again today and read all the posts so THANK YOU for your input. I will be stopping on Thursday or Friday because I’m celebrating Valentine’s Day a little early & going back on afterwards , but quick question:

Who has had the cheat foods & been successful on MC & by success, I mean you lost a fair amount of weight?????

Charity Schellenberg January 30, 2012 at 6:37 am

I am doing well on the mc and am on day 5. I have not felt hungry. However, I have just found out that I will be traveling on day 10. I live in Congo and will be traveling into the interior. It will be hard to follow the post mc recommendations for an orange juice and water transition for a couple of days and then vegetable soup. Should I rather end my fast now so as to be able to follow the post mc regime exactly, or is it ok to eat already on day 11, so long as I eat just fruits and vegetables?

Junior January 27, 2012 at 12:18 pm

I did it about 6 months ago. I lost 32 pounds in 10 days..but i would exersice alot.. I would go for long runs and would loose sometimes up to 6 pounds in a day iday

Can I eat vegetables and fruits whilst using the master cleanse

Ernestine Mullin November 30, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I am sensitive to ‘sugar’; does that mean that I should not use the Master Cleanse, even though the Maple Syrup is ‘pure’?? How does this compute for me????

dana November 22, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Lucie Kettle…I am on Day 3 of my 2nd Master Cleanse. The first time I lost 20 lbs, and I had a moment of weakness. I ate a piece of cheese. I don’t really care for the lemonade either, but I FOCUS, only make 1 glass at a time, and DRINK ALL OF THE MIXTURE AT ONCE.

Lucie kettle October 12, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Hi, I have done the master cleanse about a year ago for 31 days, and have done reallywell on it. Today, I have decided to go on it again, but I just can’t stomach the lemonade and maple syrup. I feel like I want to throw up everytime. Unfortunately tonight, I have eaten a small bean salad since I cannot tolerate the lemonade mixture. Do you have any suggestions about what I can do about this? I am so frustrated.

Today is my 10th day on the MC program. I lost total 18lb. The 1st 3 days are toughest for me. I almost quit like thousand of time but I somehow overcame. I lost probably 15lb the 1st 5 days and my body level out. I do some reading on the internet and someone said that your body metabolism slow down tremendously while on the program. So on the 6th day, I start drinking 2 packs of green tea during the day and try to do cardio & some light weight. Well.. I plan to continue another 10-14 days on the MC with more intense exercise. Running and weight lifting. My body is getting stronger & stronger and I hope I will lose another 20-30lb in the next 2 weeks.. ..

Eileen June 14, 2011 at 3:22 pm

I can’t see any reason whatsoever why you couldn’t continue to run and play tennis while doing the Master Cleanse. If you’ve never done it before however, I would suggest you take the first 3 or 4 days on a day-by-day basis. One important thing is to have all your ingredients on hand to simplify preparation of the lemonade. The other thing to consider is: since you will be consuming large volumes of liquid, the more the better, you will be eliminating more, especially for those first days with the salt water or epsom salts “flush” taken morning & night. I’ve done this cleanse since the late 70′s (on Day 14 as I write this :) & I find that as long as I have the “lemonade” & lots of good water with me wherever I go, no problem. It is, however, important to rest if your body is telling you that is what you need most. Best of luck! Bearspirit

Has anyone try the Master Cleanser with exercise?? I am running everyday and play tennis.. I will start the Master Cleanser program 2 days from now.. I am slowly ease it IN for 3 days.. I just wonder is it ok to do some running, playing tennis, swimming while you’re on the program..

I lost 13 lbs in 7 days while doing the Master Cleanse Diet. The only reason I did not do the whole 10 days was because it my dad’s birthday dinner, and I just ate a small salad! I would highly recommend this diet, I felt better physically and mentally! It makes you feel light and clean! I also felt mentally clear…It’s hard to explain, but I felt better than I ever felt on any diet! Stay Strong everyone, the final results are worth it!

Babydoll April 6, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Today was my first day and I was done drinking 60 ozs by 6pm and. I feel fine so far but I think need to use the cayenne pills because I have a condition that I can not have citrus and hot stuff and I can feel the effects of both. I am going to do this thing.

zhana March 13, 2011 at 9:54 pm

hi, i’d love trying this MC recipe but i couldnt find the grade B maple syrup at my place. Can i replace it with honey instead? Tq

Mj March 13, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Am not eating for 2 days, starting today then i will start the master clense detox on wednesday.
Am from nz and the grade b maple syrup is so expensive its quite shocking! So am going to substitute grade a or c instead.
Will be doing 20 day detox and alot of exercising so hopefully the change of maple syrup will still be as effective!
Will be back with results as soon as i notice any lol

Clarissa March 10, 2011 at 6:23 pm

this is my third blog, how come they are not published?

Clarissa March 10, 2011 at 6:13 pm

I am on my third day and feel ok. I did the diet about 3 years ago and did very well. so lets see how it will work again. I think the first 3 days are the hardest. I have an ulcer and do not want to take all those meds. Actually SB started the diet to heal ulcers, so I hope it will work, I am sure it will. My doc told me no citrus it would burn my stomach, I had the drinks and nothing burns!! I drink the mint tea and that feels good and tasts good too.

TheNYgirl January 6, 2011 at 6:12 pm

I have been on the MC for 3 days now and have gone from 130 to 124. I ran out of my trader joe’s syrup and since the Whole Foods store or Farmers market is far away I went to a Publix and purchased 2 bottles of 100% all natural syrup. Is it ok to use this? Is there a difference between organic and 100% natural?

Mint December 12, 2010 at 10:34 pm

I Lost 11pounds in 5 days using the master cleanse. it works!!!! Mind and determination plays a part too.

meg December 12, 2010 at 1:57 pm

just so everyone knows…alot of states dont sell grade “B” maple syrup…its illegal! u may have to order it online if you live in one of those states…..

jim November 9, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I just finished my 10 day run with the M.C. I had the fortune to have almost no side effects. The whole process was easy and I did not crave other foods…in fact I just never really got hungry. I had a lot of energy, etc.
I did lose 11 pounds and 1 1/2 inch off my stomach. I am going to buy Raylen’s book and study it for tips and strategies to use this process for an extended period of time ‘safely’. Overall, an excellent experience.

Niki June 20, 2010 at 4:33 pm

i’m really interested as trying this master cleanser as a “detoxification program” to clean out my system in order to reduce the amount of acne i have & for healthier skin overall , but i’m not looking to loose any weight but since the weight loss seems to be a “side effect”, for lack of a better phrase, can anyone advise me on what can be done to minimize the weight loss…..

Thanks in advance

Kinga May 8, 2010 at 9:14 pm

If you are breastfeeding you should not cleanse at all. The toxins that come out of your body go into your breastmilk.

naomi May 3, 2010 at 10:44 pm

For people who are going on it first time, this is the shopping list(for 10 days):
Recommended daily serving is 6-12 glasses of lemonade, 6 being the absolute minimum.

At least 30-40 lemons, or more depending how many you drink a day.(1 lemon=2 servings. If you drink 6 glasses a day, that’s 3 lemons a day. so times that by 10 and you will need 30 lemons. If you drink 8 glasses, you need 40. 10 glasses will need 50 lemons, 12 glasses will need 60 lemons.)

Maple syrup(grade B or C)-at least 2 liters. (one serving is 30ml. If you drink 6 servings a day that’s 180ml. 8 servings =240ml, So times that by 10. For someone who drinks 6 glasses, 1.8litres; 8 glasses 2.4liter. 10 glasses 3 liter, 12 glasses 3.6liter.)

Small bag of cayenne pepper
Small bag of unrefined, uniodized sea salt(epsom salt)
Box of laxative tea(recommended brand-traditional medicines organic herbal laxative smooth move senna)
Measuring spoon(just 1 with tsp and tbsp attached at each end is good enough)
Water bottle(600ml/20 oz size is good)

Btw it is recommended to use just pure clean water. Distilled water has been boiled, killing all the minerals so it isn’t as good.

Margo April 29, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Is it best to use fresh peppers? If so, do I just chop them up and add to water. Also, Is distilled water ok to use.
Margo

To all on the last sentence, wish me all the luck in the world, not lick!!!!

mz.hurricane April 26, 2010 at 9:33 am

Yea, i’m currently thinking about starting the “Master Cleanse Diet”, so that I may lose some unecessary weight. As I was reading others comments on how it helped them, or how it was introduced to there lives, has made me reach a decision to continue with Master Cleanse, wish me all the lick in the world, and to all of you as well!

bell April 19, 2010 at 8:49 pm

I prepared six containers of pre-mixed cleanser with all ingredients added . I read the article on storing the pre-mixed cleanser . it indicated that the mix could be stored with the maple syrup and lemonade in the fridge , the pepper should be added later . Will the ingredients still be effective

alice berry April 11, 2010 at 3:42 am

Taneka March 23, 2010 at 11:10 am

You can find Grade B maple syrup @ Wholesale Foods on Poplar if ur in the Memphis TN area

Robert Montcalm February 19, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s are good suggestions if you have them where you live. You can find really good grade b syrup online though and at good prices.

Hi I am wanting to start the M.C. Diet but I am a bit confused about the whole laxatives and Salt water flush. When do I take a laxative and should it be tea or a pill form? Do you have to do the SWF if you are doing the laxatives and if so when and how often do I do the SWF? HELP!!!

Sandra Wyckoff February 1, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Is it ok to use 100% organic lemon juice from whole food store in place of the freshly squeezed lemons?

Ali Berry January 27, 2010 at 8:08 pm

i am going to start the master cleanse diet and in was wondering if grade a maple syrup was fine becuse i cant find garde b and im aunt said i will die!!! if i dont eat anything is that true.

noah December 8, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Ash, if you have a Whole Foods grocery store where you live you can find Grade B maple syrup there. Trader Joe’s also has it, again, if you have that store near you. Just to let you know, and if this applies to you, there’s a Master Cleanse iphone app that is really good. It has a shopping list of ingredients, nutritional virtues of all ingredients used, a pre-cleanse preparation guide, instructions while on the cleanse, a post-cleanse guide, tips, and a very nice feature is a weight tracker and progress tracker so you can see the weight you’re loosing. I know the Master Cleanse is first and foremost a body/mind detoxification program, but hey, losing weight is just one of the nice perks of doing the master cleanse!

Illesha November 27, 2009 at 1:24 pm
