A reader wanted to know why you should not take vitamins while on the Master Cleanse.

In the original Master Cleanser book Stanley Burroughs, the creator of the master cleanse says taking vitamins and supplements will prevent you from getting the desired result from the Master Cleanse. The reason he gives is vitamins and supplements will never be able to match the nutritional benefits of the real food Nature provides us with.

He also warns that the improper balance caused by taking vitamins can be harmful to your body.

Here’s my advice: Try doing the Master Cleanse without taking vitamins if you can. If you feel like you can’t complete the cleanse without vitamins then try taking only half a vitamin a day, or half of what you normally take on an average day.

I know some people will say you absolutely can’t take any vitamins on the Master Cleanse, and I agree its best not to. But, if you feel like taking vitamins will help you during the cleanse, and that you won’t be able to finish the cleanse without vitamins then go ahead and take them.

The way I see it if taking vitamins is the deal breaker for you, meaning it’s either take vitamins and finish the cleanse, or not take vitamins and don’t finish the cleanse then by all means take the vitamins.

I mentioned above Stanley Burroughs, the creator of the master cleanse warned that vitamins can be harmful because they can contain too much or to little of certain vitamins. Most of the time they contain far too much, and you can actually overdose on vitamins if you’re not careful.

  1. I’ve done the MC a few times with good results the 1st time. In my opinion it is best not to do the MC while taking vitamins or pills of any kind cause there is SWF involved as well as a tea which is very important for the MC to work & for you to see amazing results. If you take any pills it will only be flush so do the MC without & if you can’t stop taking your meds then talk to your GP and see what your options are. I was taking anti-depressants & my daily vitamins but I have stopped to do the MC. On a different note the MC isn’t for everyone. I’m going to start the MC after the holidays will be going to a recruit by myself because this is the only way I can discipline myself. I will include light exercise & body wraps to help my weight loss journey. I’m doing this for a total detox 1st & 2ndly to lose some weight. Remember people drink a lot of water IT IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT YOU DRINK A LOR OF WATER! If anyone wants to do the MC together for support get in touch serious people only please, I’m starting after the Holidays in the 1st week of Jan & going away for a whole month so this will be not only a challenge for me but a difficult journey & I would appreciate motivation & support from anyone who cares & you will get mine too. Good luck to everyone & God Bless. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

  3. I’ve attempted to complete 10 days of the MC over a year ago and had to stop at day 7 due to severe headaches and back pain. At the time it made me nervous that there was a possibility the pain in my back was kidney problems from the cleanse, but then after talking with a friend who has done the MC several times, she told me I wasn’t consuming enough water with the diet. She said not getting enough water intake alond with 6-12 lemonades/day can cause major dehydration which leads to headaches and muscle pain. Is this information accurate? I really want to give the MC another try!!!!

  4. I am on the 8th day og the MC! its been an incredible journey, breaking the pain pill addictions has been difficult and the MC has done it! I have not been able to sleep at night however, i wake up and stay up most of the night. i am glad that i have been secluded on retreat to do this fast. but now that i am back to work, i need sleep and am tempted to take my sleep meds. What will happen if i do? thanks James

  5. I am very eager to start the MC. My husband just started it and it got me thinking about my prescriptions. Can you still take anti-depressants and sleeping pills while on the MC? I also use the NuvaRing for birth-control. Will it affect the outcome of the MC? Thanks so much for your help.

  9. This is my third attempt at the master cleanse. The first two were a warm up for me, and four days was my limit. I am currently on day four and doing pretty good. My question is can spirulina be added to a glass or two of the lemonade during the day, and what effecrt if any could that have on someone?

  10. I am considering doing the cleanse but have not started it yet. I am wondering if it affects birth control pills or not?
And when you say not to take vitamins are you just speaking about a daily vitamin, does that include things like cranberry pills and fish oil. I take these daily for wrinkles and for urinary health.

  11. Dear Mr. Sterling,

I have a question about taking prescription medications while on the master cleanse. I have several prescriptions for sinus problems, allergies and other… Can I still take this medication if I do the master cleanse? What effect will it create? What about the stomache upset you can get from some medications where you are told to take with food or dairy? I really want to start the Master Cleanse at least for the 3 day minimum. Help!

  12. I’ve done the cleanse 2 times so far with good results. One thing that I have done both times is to soak in the tub with hot as I can stand water and salt, either epsom or sea salt, the thought is to draw out impurities. Do you think this is helpful?
